Mozart was introduc’d to the talented amateur soprano Countess Josefa Paumgartner by Christian Cannabich in Munich (Nov 1780); following the premiere of Idomoneo (26 Jan 1781) he promis’d to set a scena for her & chose the Act III scenes 1 & 2 of Metastasio’s Libretto Ezio which was originally written for Pietro Auletta’s Opera in 1728 (but the text was rush’d into another prior production by Nicolo Porpora on 26 Dec of that year); it was later set by Handel (1732), Hasse (1740), Jommelli, Gluck, Myslevecek & over 45 other composers through 1820. Mozart presented the Accompagnato recitativo ed aria (in E-flat, K. 369 on 8th March 1781 to Paumgartner (‘Misera, dove son?...ah, non so io che parlo...’) -

The autograph score survives —currently hous’d in the Bavarian State Library in Munich : here is a loose translation of the Italian text of this Scena into modern English :

Fulvia (daughter of Massimo, jealous of Emperor Valentinian III for flirting with her mother) :

RECITATIVO ACCOMPAGNATIO

(Ezio, Act III scenes 1 & 2)

FULVIA :

‘Wretched Lady ! Where am I ? Is it the air of the Tiber I breathe or is this Thebes—or maybe Argos I am walking in, those Grecian shores home to so many Tragedies ? The local Furies have gather’d here—do they want a sacrifice along the lines of Cadmus or of Atridus I wonder ! Over there the ungrateful cruelty of an unjust monarch & of a traitorous father fills me with horror ! The guilt of which chills both my blood & that of the innocent fiancé whose face is ever before my eyes ! O fatal images ! O Memories ! O Torture ! Yet I, wretched creature, am the one still breathing & speaking !’

Aria (E-flat) ‘Ah, but it is not I myself who am speaking but rather the delirious pain in my heart who utters these pronouncements ! Heaven is blind to the anguish of my heart ! My only request of the gods is sudden death—but they have sent no lightning bolt to strike me down !’

SYNOPSIS of the Plot of EZIO (1728)

Act 1 - setting Rome in the year 451 CE following the defeat of Hannibal

The Roman Emperor Valentinian III greets the general Flavius Aëtius (Ezio) who is greeted by his bettoth’d Fulvia, daughter of Massimo (still stinging by Valentinian’s flirtation with his wife...); Massimo hatches a Plot to separate his daughter from Ezio by telling him the Emperor intends to marry Fulvia & tries to get Ezio to kill him; Ezio refuses; then he tries to get Fulvia to marry the Emperor then kill him on his wedding night; she refuses; Massimo then hires some killers to do the job...Meanwhile Onoria, the Emperor’s sister, in love with Ezio, quizzes Varo about Ezio’s affections.

The Emperor & Ezio have a quarrel about who’s to marry Fulvia but Valentinian declares he will marry her the very next day.

Act 2 - Pacing nervously outside the Palace walls Massimo waits to hear if his co-conspirator Emelio & his henchmen have ‘done the deed’ but Fulvia rushes in to tell her father that Valentinian is still alive & unharm’d & that Emilio is under arrest & that both he & Ezio are under suspicion of Treason. Fulvia is reluctant to implicate either one & encourages Ezio to flee—but after seeing Fulvia & Ezio together in love he throws Ezio in prison.

Act 3 - Onoria visits her beloved in his prison chains with a seal’d note from the Emperor if he names his conspirators he will pardon him but Ezio tears it up; then Onoria runs back to the Emperor urging him to interrogate that Fulvia who knows more than she’s telling...Meanwhile Emilio is dying & tells the Emperor Ezio is innocent — then Fulvia steps forward & tells him she is the real culprit who deserves death not Ezio...outside Massimo is busy incensing the rabble against the Emperor then enters & draws his sword in an attempt to stab him to death but Fulvia throws herself in front of the blade at the last minute — then the Emperor, sav’d a second time from assassination, pardons Ezio & allows Fulvia to marry him—with Ezio then begging the Emperor to pardon Massimo for his precipitous temper; the Emperor relents & all ends happily ...
