Despite his short life, his rapid pace of composition resulted in more than 800 works of virtually every Western classical genre of his time. Many of these compositions are acknowledged as pinnacles of the symphonic, concertante, chamber, operatic, and choral repertoire. Mozart is widely regarded as among the greatest composers in the history of Western music, with his music admired for its "melodic beauty, its formal elegance and its richness of harmony and texture".
Born in Salzburg, then in the Holy Roman Empire and currently in Austria, Mozart showed prodigious ability from his earliest childhood. Already competent on keyboard and violin, he composed from the age of five and performed before European royalty. His father took him on a grand tour of Europe and then three trips to Italy. At 17, he was a musician at the Salzburg court but grew restless and traveled in search of a better position.
While visiting Vienna in 1781, Mozart was dismissed from his Salzburg position. He stayed in Vienna, where he achieved fame but little financial security. During his final years there, he composed many of his best-known symphonies, concertos, and operas. His Requiem was largely unfinished by the time of his death at the age of 35, the circumstances of which are uncertain and much mythologized.

This sonata for me has always been one of Mozart's hidden jewels, grossly underrated and underplayed. It was somehow more renowned in my childhood than it appears to be today.
That first movement is as deeply, almost heart-rendingly expressive as anything Mozart ever wrote. That is well brought out in this performance.
And the tranquil mood of that extraordinary first movement is hardly, if it at all, disturbed by the succeeding minuet, helped in no small matter by the trio being once again in the tonic key of the sonata.
Even the final movement fits in nicely in this performance. No jarring interruption of the preceding in any sense.
This work definitely deserves better appreciation as a true masterpiece, and for me really stands out among all his early sonatas.
It is exquisitely presented here, and I only wish that I knew the name of the artist.

+alger3041 I totally agree with you.There are so many underplayed shaded works by Mozart only because his production is genuinely inhuman. Pretty much everything he wrote is outstanding. In my exploration of Mozart I simply discovered dozens of pieces no one really cares about but are absolute genius like this sonata.

+François Jutier Thank you, but I have to modify my comment somewhat. Beauty is always in the ears of the beholder. There are works of Mozart that are widely renowned, widely proclaimed as masterpieces, that hardly move me at all, whereas there are works such as this one, widely dismissed, that move me to my very roots. And I could say this about almost any composer. One simply has to partake in extensive listening to determine for oneself what is personally valuable and what is not. There is no substitute for that. Going by the next one's opinion or picking up information from books on the subject or taking music appreciation courses is not the answer. These latter have only limited utility.Francois, I have for a fact had the experience whereby, upon expressing an opinion, was advised that I was in a minority of one. I have no respect for those who state that such and such is considered to be (what it is), but that means nothing to me - I lose all respect. I personally have to listen and find out for oneself, and I advise others to do likewise - just listen to the music and find out how it affects you - never mind general critical opinion or appraisal - it is inherently worthless. One simply find out for oneself.

@climate engineering is killing the eco system I fully understand the reasons for your preferences, if I cannot entirely share them. Concerto No. 26 has not impressed me the way No. 27 has. But I will give No. 16 a listen. I must confess that I do not know it at all.
By the same token, there are numerous works of Beethoven that do not get their full due either, in my opinion, while at the same time, I would say that there are very roughly a half dozen of his piano sonatas that for me are not up to his best standard.
