Despite his short life, his rapid pace of composition resulted in more than 800 works of virtually every Western classical genre of his time. Many of these compositions are acknowledged as pinnacles of the symphonic, concertante, chamber, operatic, and choral repertoire. Mozart is widely regarded as among the greatest composers in the history of Western music, with his music admired for its "melodic beauty, its formal elegance and its richness of harmony and texture".
Born in Salzburg, then in the Holy Roman Empire and currently in Austria, Mozart showed prodigious ability from his earliest childhood. Already competent on keyboard and violin, he composed from the age of five and performed before European royalty. His father took him on a grand tour of Europe and then three trips to Italy. At 17, he was a musician at the Salzburg court but grew restless and traveled in search of a better position.
While visiting Vienna in 1781, Mozart was dismissed from his Salzburg position. He stayed in Vienna, where he achieved fame but little financial security. During his final years there, he composed many of his best-known symphonies, concertos, and operas. His Requiem was largely unfinished by the time of his death at the age of 35, the circumstances of which are uncertain and much mythologized.

@Kris9kris Honest comment. No hagiography. There are obviously many people who love the quintets. The literature glows about them. I have never found much in them. I probably like the g minor most, but do not see in them what I see in the Divertimento for string trio, the two piano quartets or the quintet with winds. What can I say, different strokes for different folks, I suppose.

@wolfie There are relatively few compositions by Mozart I can think of that are genuinely badly written (unlike Schubert or Beethoven who produced stuff that’s strikingly substandard) save for a handful of his juvenilia, but there are definitely things by him that are markedly uninspired and forgettable: as with any other genius of his calibre. What do you think of the Freimauerkantate for instance? An utterly mundane, dime a dozen piece (for Mozart’s standards at least) sandwiched between such crowning achievements as the Magic Flute, Clemenza di Tito and the Requiem. I also confess, I’m not exactly the biggest fan of some of the Horn Concertos either, but that’s probably because of the harmonic limitations and narrow range of the rather crude natural horn Mozart had to work with.

5:57 wow... It's hard to tell from that cello sound that it's actually a viola... As a violist, I am relieved almost to tears that the viola can produce this sound.

Don't know if I am right, but it seems to me that the sound is quiet warm on these period instruments... Anyway thanks for uploading all the quintets of Mozart! :)

I've much enjoyed my odyssey through Mozart's six string quintets - splendid works all of them (with the possible exception of No. 1) - and it's so helpful to have the score. Thank you!

Number one is amazing, I recommend going back to it, it is one of his earliest masterpieces in my opinion (but I am a bad source as I don't know the exact age he composed his other early pieces - I just know he was 17 when he wrote it). The first movement has a very rustic character in the theme similar to this one, funnily enough. The two middle movements work well and the final movement is optimistic and wonderful. It is unfortunate that he did not have the same ability to write counterpoint, but you can't expect a 17 year old to be as good as a 30 year old Mozart in that skill.
