Despite his short life, his rapid pace of composition resulted in more than 800 works of virtually every Western classical genre of his time. Many of these compositions are acknowledged as pinnacles of the symphonic, concertante, chamber, operatic, and choral repertoire. Mozart is widely regarded as among the greatest composers in the history of Western music, with his music admired for its "melodic beauty, its formal elegance and its richness of harmony and texture".

Born in Salzburg, then in the Holy Roman Empire and currently in Austria, Mozart showed prodigious ability from his earliest childhood. Already competent on keyboard and violin, he composed from the age of five and performed before European royalty. His father took him on a grand tour of Europe and then three trips to Italy. At 17, he was a musician at the Salzburg court but grew restless and traveled in search of a better position.

While visiting Vienna in 1781, Mozart was dismissed from his Salzburg position. He stayed in Vienna, where he achieved fame but little financial security. During his final years there, he composed many of his best-known symphonies, concertos, and operas. His Requiem was largely unfinished by the time of his death at the age of 35, the circumstances of which are uncertain and much mythologized.

The most interesting thing about ‘Mozart’s’ Symphony 37 was that the world thought it was by Mozart, and did not realise until 1907 that it was (apart from the introduction and some minor alterations in orchestration), actually by Michael Haydn.

I truly wonder how they could have thought that. I know they had a score of the symphony in Mozart's hand, but it bears so little stylistic similarity to anything else written by him. Also, to my ears, quite far below the level of quality that Mozart was routinely achieving at that point in his musical development.

You are absolutely right; one can only presume that seeing Mozart’s name on the score, people took leave of all critical senses.

Symphony ‘37’ - as you say - clearly sits somewhat incongruously and anachronistically alongside the adjacent Mozart symphonies.

Some people must have been suspicious about it before, but it’s astonishing that it took until 1907 to clear up the issue.

We know that Mozart had some real respect for Michael Haydn - with good reason; I wonder what he found so attractive about this symphony that he took so much trouble over it ?

As a Mozart fan I could never understand why there wasn't a Symphony no. "37". I vaguely remember reading that symphony 37 was some type of overture or something. Now thanks to the info on YouTube, I've learned that Mozart needed to quickly provide additional program (concert) music for his newest opera at the time. Also, he was being rushed to finish the "Linz" symphony for his court appointment and therefore borrowed Michael Haydn's G major symphony as a quick fix, not knowing that it would come to be known as his symphony number "37". THANKS FOR SOLVING THIS MYSTERY. Its not the kind of thing you can easily "look up" in a textbook.

La musique de Michael Haydn n'a pas à rougir auprès de celle de son frère et de Wolfgang Mozart. Elle est plus conventionnelle et moins inventive mais mérite amplement qu'on s'y attarde...De ce fait et à cause de sa proximité physique avec ses deux "parents" personne l'écoute guère. The numbering of Mozart's symphonies stuck since the 1st publication of the catalogue of Mozart's works by Köchel in 1862. Five editions later, the number of symphonies is around 55 (the authorship of many early symphonies is still debated). Yet, the 41st will always be known with that number.

Only listening to the introduction and the orquestration of this symphony one can be totally sure that this is NOT Mozart. I mean, that is so far away from being mozart. Mozart is much more lively and powerful although Haydn is perfect but not surprising enough, it sounds similar to the work of his elder brother Joseph.

Not sure I’ve understood your point here:

i) The introduction to this symphony was by Mozart who also altered slightly Michael Haydn’s orchestration in the rest of the work.

ii) The rest of the symphony does have something of Salzburg about it and therefore some slight resemblance to Mozart - hence the mis-attribution for so long - it has almost no resemblance whatsoever to any symphonies composed by Joseph Haydn.

That said, I agree absolutely that the world believing until as late as 1907 that Symphony ‘37’ was by Mozart is astonishing.

The whole symphony apart from the introduction is by Michael Haydn; Mozart added the introduction, but also made some other minor alterations in 1783 - including removing the solo bassoon part - when he performed the work.

This performance simply restores Michael Haydn’s original.

Good point; it’s worth remembering though that in the 18th century, composers were very practical and pragmatic and more often than not, wrote and performed music for the available forces, rather than wrote music expecting the players to be found.

The removal of the bassoon may simply have reflected the non-availability of a bassoonist at the time.

Hate to say it, but I've been sampling Mozart's symphonies before #37 and they pretty much suck. Either they're somewhat starchy and generic sounding. Symphony #24, 25 and 29 are solid, but don't have the "it" factor we find in the final three (39, 40 and 41).

Mozart’s symphonies moved to a completely different level once he moved to Vienna; Symphonies 35, 36, 38, and 39 - 41 are six of the greatest of all Classical symphonies (ie c.1750 - 1800), along with a number by Joseph Haydn.
