In October of 1789, having just received a Scrittura to compose an opera buffa by Emperor Josef II (Cosi fan tutte, premiered 26 Jan 1790) Mozart was ask’d to provide 2 additional accompanied recitativi ed arie to an October 1789 revival of Martin y Soler’s operatic hit of 7 Jan 1786 ‘Il Burbero di Buon Cuore’ (‘The Kindhearted Grump’) at the Burgtheatre in Vienna a year after Soler had pack’d his bags for St Petersburg (in 1788); Mozart had attended the Vienna premiere of this delightful opera buffa & evidently thought very highly of the concerted pieces (7 Jan 1786) which he attended with his English pupil Thomas Attwood (whose composition lessons began on Monday 1 August 1785) & the composer Stephen Storace (whose sister Nancy play’d Angelica); by 1789 Mozart had lost his English/Irish friends (they departed on 4 March 1787 with plans to invite Mozart to England over the following few years) and the 2 additional scenes were specifically compos’d to suit the voice of an (unknown?) soprano playing the part of the ‘spendthrift wife’ of Giocondo (Lucilla)—to judge from the music he wrote for her it was probably written specifically for the voice of Adriana Ferarese del Bene whom he had sign’d to play the part of Fiordiligi in his upcoming production of Cosi fan Tutte (2 other candidates that have been put forward include the sopranos Dorothea Busani & Luisa Laschi); his two ‘insertion arias’ (K. 582 Chi Sa, Chi Sa & K. 583 Vado, ma dove ?) each were originally prefac’d by a 25-30 bar recitativo accompagnato which were both recently discovered in 2001 in a copyist’s hand from October 1789 in the Vienna Court Theatre Score (the 2 arias in the copyist’s score began on the reverse side of the opening page); for this recording the prefatory Recitativo Accompagnato for the Aria ‘Vado, ma Dove ?’ (which ventures into c-minor & ends in E-flat major) has been unfortunately omitted — we can only hope common taste & sense will prevail and that these Accompagnati will be recorded soon & placed into its rightful place in the Koechel Catalogue as K. 582a & 583a respectively...

The words of the Aria itself (K. 583 in E-flat major, with some of his most heartfelt music featuring 2 clarinets—often replac’d in performance with a pair of corni di bassetto—were written in Italian verse by Lorenzo da Ponte : here is a rough prose translation of the Italian text:

Lucilla : Act II scene ii (when her spendthrift ways are finally reveal’d & she is to be bann’d from the family)

‘I must leave—but wherever shall I go ? Ye gods ! Does not Heaven feel any pity at all for (Angelica’s) torment, or for any groans of mine own ? Cupid ! You who speak directly to mine own heart please guide me now ! For I admit your checks & warnings have caus’d me to doubt mine own sagacity !’

Plot Summary.

ACT ONE

A rich old bachelor (Faramondo) has two wards (a nephew Giocondo married to a spendthrift Lucilla & a niece Angelica who is secretly in love with Valerio) whose lives he has made a living hell. Lucilla has spent both their fortunes on expensive clothes & jewelry & now Angelica cannot marry without a dowry...Meanwhile Valerio has been sneaking in and out of the house (even spending the night !) causing the maid Marina headaches in removing evidence of his ‘nocturnal visits’—Giocondo knows he’s broke so decides to send his sister to a convent but the elderly bachelor friend (Duval) of Giocondo blurts out the plan to Faramondo who confronts Lucilla & who confesses her desire rather to marry; Faramondo (thinking her dowry is intact) decides to find a suitable husband—why not the bachelor Duval ? When Valerio is discover’d hiding in a closet Faramondo explodes in a rage claiming everybody in his family has been lying to him about everything ...

ACT TWO

Valerio explains that he is a Couture Dressmaker come over to see Lucilla & Faramondo half-accepts his excuse for being in the house...Meanwhile a letter from their family accountant lays out their bankruptcy proceedings & Lucilla admits to being the cause of the two wards losing their inheritances—and is banish’d from the family (this is where K. 583’s Vado, ma dove? comes in...with Lucilla praying that Cupid will come to the rescue...) Meanwhile Duval serenades Angelica about love—of course he’s referring to his own feelings for her but Angelica assumes he’s singing about Valerio — and when he discovers her infatuation for Valerio he drops his engagement plans...which sends Faramondo into yet another rage when he discovers everybody in the family is broke—but Lucilla, ready to depart, faints dead away causing Faramondo to shew pity for everybody and agrees to pay off all his wards’ debts & reinstate their original inheritances & Angelica gets to marry Valerio after all...
