Saturn
Wonder (Stevie) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Packing my bags going away
To a place where the air is clean
On Saturn
There's no sense to sit and watch people die
We don't fight our wars the way you do
We put back all the things we use
On Saturn
There's no sense to keep on doing such crimes

There's no principles in what you say
No direction in the things you do
For your world is soon to come to a close
Through the ages all great men have taught
Truth and happiness just can't be bought - or sold
Tell me why are you people so cold

I'm
Going back to Saturn where the rings all glow
Rainbow, moonbeams and orange snow
On Saturn
People live to be two hundred and five
Going back to Saturn where the people smile
Don't need cars cause we've learned to fly
On Saturn
Just to live to us is our natural high

We have come here many times before
To find your strategy to peace is war
Killing helpless men, women and children
That don't even know what they're dying for
We can't trust you when you take a stand
With a gun and bible in your hand
And the cold expression on your face
Saying give us what we want or we'll destroy

I'm
Going back to Saturn where the rings all glow
Rainbow, moonbeams and orange snow
On Saturn
People live to be two hundred and five
Going back to Saturn where the people smile
Don't need cars cause we've learned to fly

On Saturn
Just to live to us is our natural high

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Saturn" by Stevie Wonder talk about the desire to leave Earth and travel to Saturn, a planet with a utopian society, where people live in peace, and live their lives with happiness and respect for their environment. The first stanza depicts the desolation and destruction that the Earth is facing, unable to manage its resources, and being plagued by wars. Saturn is presented as a place where there is no need to commit such atrocities, where people put back all the things they use, and live in harmony with nature.

The second stanza criticizes the direction that society is taking, lacking principles and direction, and warns that if such behavior continues, the world will come to an end. Wonder suggests that the great men of history have taught that truth and happiness cannot be bought or sold, and laments the coldness that people exhibit. The third stanza addresses the issue of war, where innocent people suffer and die for the greed and ambitions of the powerful. Wonder questions the trustworthiness of those who use violence as a means to achieve their goals, and rejects their ultimatums, asserting his intention to leave for Saturn, a place where he can live in peace, free of violence, hatred, and oppression.

Every time I share this with people, I get zero response. It’s earth shattering personally. I love it.

@chasingunicorns

Bought this album when it first came out. Saturn was on a little 45 disc, together with some other extra tracks. It has always been my very favourite and never fails to make me cry. Have we learned nothing in the last 50 years? Keep sharing it, it's beautiful.
