Their producer and manager was singer-songwriter Park Jin-Young, and the Wonder Girls were signed to his talent agency JYP Entertainment. Each of the five original members were selected through auditions.

Debuting in early 2007, they became popular in the fall of that year with the song "Tell Me." They have scored five consecutive #1 hit singles: "Tell Me", "So Hot", "Nobody", "2 Different Tears" and "Be My Baby". In 2008, they won two "Artist of the Year" awards.

The group began their entry into the American market in 2009, with lead single "Nobody"; the single became the first song by a Korean group to enter the Billboard Hot 100. They are co-managed in the United States by JYP Entertainment and Jonas Group. They managed to place 4th with "Nobody" on the Canadian single charts for the past 2 weeks of March 2011.

Former member Hyuna (현아) left in June '07 due to health problems. She later joined girl group 4minute which disbanded in 2016. At the end of 2009, Sunmi (선미) left to continue her education. She was replaced with trainee Hyelim. She later on returned to singing with the release of her hit-single "24시간이 모자라" in 2013. With the announcement of Wonder Girls' comeback in 2015, Sunmi rejoined the group. Later in 2015, Sunye (선예) and Sohee (소희) officially withdrew from the group.

On 26 January 2017, Wonder Girls officially disbanded after members Sunmi and Yeeun decided not to renew their contracts. A farewell single entitled, "그려줘", was released on the groups 10th anniversary (10 February).

Wonder Girls was the only girl group to win a daesaeung at the time, they are legendary, intellectual, kind and amazing people. Wonder Girls is the reason why I stan Kpop since 2007, going to the US for full time definitely damaged their popularity but without the experience, the girls wouldn't bond as much they are. They gave us 10 years, so yes, very organic end. But a big reason why they fell apart was their stop and go approach to their career. They would disappear for huge amounts of time. In between Nobody and 2 different tears was too much time away recording and American album in NY that never came and it hurt their popularity. Same with 2NE1. An American album is floating around on a flash drive in a vault somewhere for both of these groups. But it was a waste of time and it hurt both groups. In the time they were in the US they could have come out with 3 Korean albums. This is also why Sunmi left, but we never would have got Lim or the Reboot era and Why So Lonely where they learned how to play instruments. So it all worked out. Seeing Lim and Sunmi coexist in WG at the same time despite Lim being Sunmi's replacement was so cool and interesting. I ultimately wanted one more full album but Reboot is my fave and their best. That is my favorite lineup. I don't think the lineup changes hurt them honestly because getting Sunmi back was a win in the end.

Well said. If their US market advancement was something JYP really wanted to try, he could've given them two more albums after Nobody to make sure their throne was secure before sending them off to the States and starting at bare zero. The Nobody era was definitely when their popularity peaked. Although being a Wonderful sucked at times with all the waiting and lack of attention from JYP (no concert DVDs, merch, etc.), the Reboot and Why So Lonely eras made the ride worth it. I wouldn't say their US advancement was a failure because the girls became artists they are today because of the struggles they had touring the world.

jyp in the recent episodes of Master in the House said that the U.S. company they were working with went bankrupt and they couldn't pick up the pieces. Scotter braun also put out that YG never signed the papers that gave control over CL's U.S. debut/promotions so nothing could be released

Hmm...going off the title: Disbanded. Wonder Girls grew up and wanted to focus on their own personal things. Solos, settling down, etc.

You could’ve elaborated more on their early days though. They were already pretty big before Nobody. “Tell Me” was already song of the year in 2007. They were huge. “Nobody” went viral worldwide. First KPop song to do so. It was that catalyst that sparked an English version. They then decided to take on America. So much to talk about there. They even stayed in America to learn English for this big venture. While they did make strides, it wasn’t enough. Them being away allowed SNSD to blow up finally (2009). And then 2NE1 followed. WG finally came back in late 2011 (they had a small comeback in early 2010 tho) after being away for so long because of their American activities and we’re like, “Hey! We’re still here!” While they were successful, with their comebacks post-2011, they weren’t at the same caliber as their early days. All because they were away during those critical post Golden Age days. K-Pop was starting to take off more on the Internet, and while they weren’t left behind exactly, the arena was much different. They are still one of the most important and successful groups in K-Pop but as things didn’t exactly go as planned for them on their Western adventures, they ultimately had enough after 10 years. They’ll never be forgotten and will forever be respected.

Here is what happened: Wonder Girls were planning to release an entire TV series with Nickelodeon in 2013 and they would release their album in conjunction with the series, but in late 2012, Sunye got married and announced her pregnancy. The girls at first did feel it was a bad time for Sunye to get married, but they realized they weren't thinking about her best interest, so they got behind her and supported her decision. Without their leader, they were no longer the 5 member group America was slowly starting to recognize, so they did not know what to do about American promotions. With no solution, they took a break and kind of lost confidence as the years went by. They started naturally doing their own thing and learning instruments for fun. They started playing together when they realized their was still a passion for music and they decided it would be cool to comeback as a band. This they did, with Sunmi rejoining as all the girls are very close, and that's where we get Reboot and Why So Lonely. When their JYP contract was expiring, the Wonder Girls were provided with ONE manager who was not fully committed, while Twice members each had their own manager. Wonder Girls wanted a new opportunity, so Sunmi and Yeeun set out to find a record label that would take all four of them. As they discussed which label to join, each member had a different opinion, and they realized they would rather each one feel happy instead of forcing everyone into something they did not fully want. So this is where the girls split off: Lim wanted to go to college, Sunmi found a label where she could be creative, Yeeun found a label with her working style, and Yubin was happy staying at JYP.

I actually got into kpop in late 2008
I play the nobody mv to calm my baby cousin that time cos it’s sparkly and lollipop cos it’s colorful
I can say the reason their popularity waned was because of JYP trying to push WG to break in the US market.,
2009 was when snsd 2ne1 kara beg had big hits .,snsd took advantage of that and effectively removed WG from the map(exaggeration IK, but i saw how WG was pushed aside and almost incognito when they had a comeback) they were almost like “nobody”
Not to mention Sunmi left to concentrate on her studies and was replaced🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️
JYP was the one in charge then, so he definitely was the one who screwed up WG.
Even Sunmi took a jab at him about his bad decisions regarding promoting WG then, interview was last year i think

I got into kpop when the Wonder Girls disbanded so I never got to be with them but Yubin was the first member that caught my eye when she debuted as a soloist, even though Sunmi is the most popular, I didn’t really get into her music like I did with Yubin (it is probably bc Yubin still had that retro vibe with her music)

I got into Wonder Girls rather late, around the Reboot album but just reading up on them and such, from my perspective like someone else pointed out, they spent too much time away focusing on other markets which then let other groups flourish. Later on once Twice became main priority, Wonder Girls and to an extent Miss A fell by the wayside. Glad that all of them are happy where they are and actively support each other like Yenny and Hyuna doing dance covers, Hyuna and Sunmi promoting together and Yubin and Hyelim hosting Itzys debut showcase. Their bond is strong

This was a bad video... this was like a basic timeline of WG's releases but did not even touch the surface of issues like WG in America literally hating it so much, being on illegal student visas, problems with poor health issurance and complete mismangement making them kind of forgotten when they came back to Korea. Don't forget all the drama of member switches, Hyuna in 4minute, Sunmi debuting solo being so successful > WGs work. These are all factors that contributed to the end of WGs. There were also no interviews of things WGs have spoken out about. Also failure to mention where each WG member is. The video is hollow.

They were never underrated. MissA was still at the top during their last comeback but the hiatus after Jia's departure hurt them. They might have tried doing their stuff as trio but it never worked hence the inevitable disbandment.

Partly due to poor management by JYP. JYP wasn't in a good financial state back then, in terms of financial power it was SM --- YG ----------‐ JYP.

Originally they were suppose to promote in China and Korea, but for some reason that didn't really take off. Which was fine at the time because they were one of the top girl group from 2010 to around 2012.

Then Hush didn't do to good, Suzy popularity exploded, he pushed her non stop and the group was on long hiatus. Other members barely had schedules while Suzy was everywhere earning endorsement after endorsement.

8 Singles over 7 years pretty much sums their career. Their disbandment was expected by almost everyone.

Also to add, after Jia's departure, they could not really promote as a trio because of the Korea-China issues then, banning Chinese artists to promote in Korea and vice versa. Fei's solo debut did not even soar because of it. So JYPE and the girls might have thought at that time that disbanding was the better option.

Wonder Girls had a very decent exit. You have to commend the maturity that came along with their decision and also the respect that JYPE gave to them as artists and as the children they honed for more than ten years. It was not easy to let go of the very first girl group that they created and protected. This kind of disbandment is very rare in KPop. Perhaps only WG and Sistar had this kind of departure.

Wonder Girls broke up SOLEY for musical reasons. They all wanted to experiment in different fields of music and entertainment. Wonder Girls is one of the most INNOVATIVE girl groups in Kpop NONE of the comebacks were like the previous so it's understandable for why they broke up. (HARDCORE WONDERFUL HERE) They most likely will come together again every few years for a special album and tour. If you follow the memebers individually you'll see how they still collab musically with each others solo projects so this is DEFINITELY not the end of WG.

JYP made JB record the word "Swagger" 100 times for GOT7's debut song. He rejected a HUGE chunk of Jun K.s music before he Approved Think About You. You see how he is with ITZY. Wonder Girls was the first group he ever created he won't let them put out music he's not confident in. And it forced them to really challenge themselves.

I had no idea they had so many lineup changes! JYP, to his credit, tried everything he could to break into the U.S. market--the timing was just five years early.
You could have mentioned that they each played an instrument and would play their own music for a couple of songs in their concerts. The first time I saw this in a concert video I was totally blown away! They only had to play a couple of songs, so they sounded great! I thought it was pretty cool and unique among all Kpop groups as far as I know.

A really good Kpop blogger once said that if JYP hadn't focused so much on their American breakthrough, Wonder Girls would've been as huge as GG and 2NE1. They had the unique factor of pulling off retro concepts flawlessly. Whether it's 50's jazz, 70's reggae or 80's pop. However JYP has learned from his mistakes and is managing Twice and ITZY really well.

Yes, the video kind of talks about how sucessful they were, but I remember the long hiatus between comebacks, the distance they had from the other bands and from the industry and how they were kind of hostages of the retro concept. While for many groups retro was something to play with (like T-ara and other groups did), once the trend faded the Wonder Girls had a hard time following and convincing that they were relevant. Their name was bigger than anything else, but other groups (like SNSD) were much more prolific and kept consistently coming back.
They left to the US too early and I think other groups benefited much more from the doors they opened.

I don't think so... HyunA left right after debut, do they needed a rapper and add yubin. They kept this line up for 4 years until they us business going down and sunmi left. Since they're famous as five, lim was added and they promoted for a few more years until Sohee and Sohye left and then they got into hiatus. They decided to get back together when sunmi wanted to rejoin. I don't think it is confusing at all. 9 muses is more imo...

Great video I really loved the Wonder Girls and I'm still sad about them disbanding especially right after their momentum was picking back up. But Sunmi has been extremely successful solo and i'm glad for that, hoping the other girls success in their future careers too. Also Yeeun/Ha:tfelt has some incredible solo's as well, I still listen to Ain't Nobody all the time.

Also a What Happened to T-ara would be interesting but probably incredibly long since the situation is so complex, still it would be good to have a full video documenting what went down.

Growing up as a kid in South Korea, Wonder Girls was the first girl group crush for me. The group that started my "Kpop phase," so to speak. Of course there were other groups before them, like FinKL and SES, but they were much older than me. Sohee, Sunmi and Hyuna were the same age as me, and they were hot, funny and talented. Naturally I fell in love. So watching them fall apart and eventually disband was a huge blow for me. It was as if my childhood and teenage years died with them. Now I just feel old and sad when I look at the newest girl groups.

Great video! Yes I totally agree with you why the group disbanded. I mean they gave us 10 years (so it was time to just close the chapter) while many unknown groups in the entertainment industry would be considered lucky if they can pass 1 year. Anyway I was hoping you also mentioned about this point in your video that even Wondergirls members (Yeeun and Hyerim) who are still working for JYP wrote lyrics and helped produce for some Twice songs and albums.

It’s obvious. Hyuna is commenting in the song about the male gaze. How he forces her to be younger in mentality. She saying how young do I have to be with you to call you my baby? Baby. The irony is that she is fighting this because she’s happy and content in her age, but his restrictions has her questioning herself. It was also her response to the Korean public who force female k pop artists to act childish and teenagish up into their darn twenties and thirties. She found it to be ridiculous.
