I Love You
Woodkid Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Where the light shivers offshore
Through the tides of oceans
We are shining in the rising sun

As we are floating in the blue
I am softly watching you
Oh boy, your eyes betray what burns inside you
Whatever I feel for you
You only seem to care about you
Is there any chance you could see me, too?
'Cause I love you
Is there anything I could do
Just to get some attention from you?
In the waves, I've lost every trace of you
Where are you?

After all I drifted ashore
Through the streams of oceans
Whispers wasted in the sand

As we were dancing in the blue
I was synchronized with you
But now the sound of love is out of tune

Whatever I feel for you
You only seem to care about you
Is there any chance you could see me, too?
'Cause I love you
Is there anything I could do
Just to get some attention from you?
In the waves, I've lost every trace of you
Where are you?

Whatever I feel for you
You only seem to care about you
Is there any chance you could see me, too?
'Cause I love you
Is there anything I could do
Just to get some attention from you?

In the waves, I've lost every trace of you
Where are you?

Overall Meaning

Woodkid's song "I Love You" appears to be about unrequited love. The lyrics tell the story of two individuals floating in the blue, one of whom (the singer) is in love with the other. They are both described as "shining in the rising sun," suggesting a sense of optimism and joy, but the singer's feelings are marred by frustration and heartbreak. The second verse seems to suggest that the relationship has ended, with the singer having "drifted ashore" and lost their love in the waves. They express a longing for their partner's attention, but resent that they seem to only care about themselves.

The language in the song is very poetic, with vivid imagery that captures the beauty of the ocean and the emotional intensity of the singer's experience. The repetition of the chorus, in which the singer begs for attention from their lover, reinforces the sense of desperation and isolation they feel. The contrast between the beauty of their surroundings and the pain of their emotions is palpable, creating a sense of tension and unease throughout the song.

Overall, "I Love You" is a haunting and deeply affecting representation of the complexities of love and heartbreak. It captures the sense of longing that many of us feel when we are in love with someone who does not return our affections, and conveys a deep sense of loss and sadness.

Tekst piosenki:

Today I will tell you a story about a man drowned
in the cold waters of the ocean.
After the loss of his loved ones.
This story is about a man who died twice

Where the light shivers offshore
Through the tides of oceans
We are shining in the rising sun

As we are floating in the blue
I am softly watching you
Oh boy your eyes betray what burns inside you

Whatever I feel for you
You only seem to care about you
Is there any chance you could see me too?
'Cos I love you
Is there anything I could do
Just to get some attention from you?
In the waves I’ve lost every trace of you
Oh where are you?

After all I drifted ashore
Through the streams of oceans
Whispers wasted in the sand

As we were dancing in the blue

In the waves I’ve lost every trace of you
Oh where are you?

At the start of the clip, he is speaking in Russian (it's an actual Russian speaking Russian, too). He says, "Today I shall tell you a story of a man who drowned in a cold ocean, having lost one he loved. It is a story about a man who died twice."

@warumawaru

thank you so much for the translation... seriously... thank you.

@flosamus

Papasconketchup Teehee, you make me blush! 😊 😊 It just felt too important for people to miss out on :)

@MADMAX-tv8su

thank you soo much

@zwolofsky

do you think that it could be the "Drowning Man" who loves the Organ guy, and that because it appears to be an older Russia they weren't allowed to be together? So the gay drowning man killed himself because he couldn't be with the one he really loves? It'd be a cool twist?

@flosamus

To be honest, I've always interpreted it differently: the priest is singing about himself a 'lifetime' ago. The 'drowning in a cold ocean' might be a metaphor - he ended his life, as he knew it, right then, and started a new life as a priest.

The hands at the end, to me, suggest it may also be a metaphor - when he 'came back' into a new life, he was still never whole, never quite alive, as such. Althought alternatively, that he may have actually drowned, but came back as a sort of 'ghost' of a holy man, but I prefer my first interpretation.

This is all imo, of course.

my son passed five days ago. I cried to my grandma that I should be planning his birthday not his funeral arrangements. I look down at my phone ready to make more calls and google search was up and read "I love you" and this was the song that was showing. We enjoyed listening to Woodkid durning relax time. I miss him dearly. I just thought I'd share my weird experience just now.

@megamanx1291

Lilly Gardener Seeing as you can share this with fellow lovers of this song really makes me see that you're a very strong woman who can manage to keep her head up no matter what. My condolences stranger, may your son rest in peace. And I hope you'll pick up the pace soon, I am sure that your son looks up to you even up there in heaven. God Bless you and your family and enjoy the beautiful miracles music can bestow us.

@jman090

Sorry for your loss. He is in a much better place, watching down from the clouds at you. God bless you and your family.
