Stabat Mater
Woodkid Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In the glorious days, till we lost our ways
Hey, do you recall when the war was just a game?
Now the wind ventures to other plains
Hey, when will I see you again if I go?

This train whistles and blows all sounds away
Hey, how could we be close again?
Now the night is bathing in disgrace
Hey, do you still braid some flowers in your hair
Come the sound of boots and metal chains
Hey, will the perfume of the daisies remain?

A circus of horses in dancing in the bay
Hey, now the fire's in the way

The past is sucked by quicksands I'm afraid
Hey, do you recall when the war was just a game?

Overall Meaning

Woodkid's song "Stabat Mater" showcases his masterful storytelling abilities, as the lyrics tell the tale of loss and longing for a time when life was simpler. In the opening lines, he references the "glorious days" before something changed and they "lost their ways". The mention of war being a game highlights the recklessness and naivete of youth, and the sadness of realizing the consequences of those actions.

As the song progresses, Woodkid sings of the passing of time and separation from those he cares about. The train imagery creates a sense of distance and the idea that he's moving further away from what he's missing. The mention of night "bathing in disgrace" adds a layer of darkness and hopelessness to the song. The lines "Come the sound of boots and metal chains, hey, will the perfume of the daisies remain?" suggest a stark contrast between the beauty of nature and the harshness of reality, and the fear that those two things cannot coexist.

Was looking up a Gregorian chant named Stabat Mater, the chant about Maria, when this popped up. Funny how he uses such 'smart' and less obvious titles for his songs. Makes it that much more interesting. Woodkid is one of my favorite artists of today and he keeps on amazing me. (Saw him live last year and nearly died of happiness).

stabat mater is originally a classical hymn about Mary's pain during Jesus's crucifixion.
