The Great Escape
Woodkid Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Tell me that we'll always be together
We'll be riding horses all the way
'Cause boy I feel that men are meant to be
More than the shadows of each other

This road is finally standing up to the sky
Boy we're free, so what is fate to say
How things are gonna turn out now?

If storms are breaking over great escapes
Boy, we'll find how to make it with the rain
This rage will lead us through the burning plains
No matter what they say, we're heroes, boy we'll get to break out

Now we're finally standing up to the sky
Look at me, boy, so what is fate to say
How things are gonna turn out now?
Can't you see that we're dead until we wake up

All your dreams are about to happen now
We are racing to the break of dawn

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Woodkid's song The Great Escape speak to the power of perseverance and the bond between two people on a journey. The singer is asking their partner to assure them that they will always be together, perhaps in the face of uncertainty or danger. The imagery of riding horses conjures a sense of adventure and determination, and the idea that "men are meant to be more than the shadows of each other" feels like a nod to the importance of individuality within a relationship.

The chorus is a declaration of freedom and resilience, with the singers asserting that they will weather any storm and overcome any obstacle. The line "this rage will lead us through the burning plains" feels particularly powerful, conjuring images of perseverance in the face of chaos or destruction. The repeated phrase "boy we'll get to break out" drives home the message that the singers will not be held down by their circumstances, but rather will triumph in the end.

The final stanza feels like a call to action, urging the listener to wake up and make their dreams happen. The words "racing to the break of dawn" give the impression of urgency and determination, like there's no time to waste in pursuing what you want. Overall, The Great Escape feels like an anthem for anyone facing hardship or adversity, encouraging listeners to stay steadfast and push through whatever challenges come their way.

"I want everyone to feel like heroes when they hear my songs."

@Altair2000

I quit listening to Yoann's songs due to an ego problem of mine over singing these songs as love songs, rather than leaving them unsang and unused until i found the proper context for their individual uses. In short, I used to try to get girls with these songs, when all I managed to do is strengthen our friendships until no options were left for me in that area. That's where I am now thanks to Woodkid and my irresponsibility with his bottomless talent.

@millinom

+Deciduous Livingston lol or maybe singing songs to girls is overrated

@Krynictrace

+Deciduous Livingston You serenaded girls with songs from an album that's said to be about a priest with depression who kills himself?

Let me paint you a picture, the songs in the album are in chronological order, it starts with "The Golden Age", as in, the best of times, when he was with his family, but he ran away from them (Run Boy Run), and joins the army to explore the world (The Great Escape), he then became a priest after war but also had depression (I Love You), he then killed himself, the next three or four songs are about the impact of the suicide, then he gets to heaven (Conquest of Spaces), but he gets pushed away due to the sin of suicide, (Falling), and gets regrets about what he has done and about all his hopes he had (Where I Live), and is then stuck in hell (The Other Side).

This theory isn't mine, but I like this one, I found this on a forum.

@erick2800

I think of this quote every time I hear any of hit faster/action songs.
