Shadows
Woodland Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Take me back to the shadow of your wings
Take me back to the place where my heart sings
For there is a hunger deep within
That cannot be fed by earthly things

Breathe your life into my soul
Where I'm broken, make me whole
Draw me close, call me your own
How I've waited, how I've longed for you

You lifted my head when I lay in despair
In my father's house I find mercy there
The place I'm from is the place I belong
Another prodigal come stumbling home

Set your shape in me, grow your grace in me
Shine your light through me, make it well with me

Overall Meaning

In "Shadows," Woodland beckons to be taken back to the safety and comfort of the metaphorical shadow of somebody's wings. This repetition of "Take me back" in the beginning indicates a yearning to reunite, or to return to a previous state or place. It then asserts that there is an emptiness within the singer that cannot be satiated by anything of this world. This could imply a longing for inner peace or divine fulfillment.

The song suddenly shifts its focus, asking for divine intervention to breathe life into the singer's soul, heal their brokenness and make them feel complete. The following lyrics express a deep yearning and desire for the divine to come closer, which stems from the belief that every individual was created to be in a relationship with their Creator.

There is a callback to the biblical parable of the prodigal son with "The place I'm from is the place I belong / Another prodigal come stumbling home". The choice to use the word "stumbling" indicates humility and contrition on the singer's part, as the narrative of the prodigal son concerns a son who wrongs his father, wastes his inheritance and is eventually welcomed back with open arms. The father of the son sees him from far away and runs to him, which is also highlighted in the second line of the verse: "You lifted my head when I lay in despair/ In my father's house I find mercy there." The imagery used in this song is very powerful and emotive, as it resonates with its listeners on a spiritual level.
