Do Re Mi
Woody Guthrie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Lots of folks back East, they say, is leavin' home every day
Beatin' the hot old dusty way to the California line
'Cross the desert sands they roll, gettin' out of that old dust bowl
They think they're goin' to a sugar bowl, but here's what they find
Now, the police at the port of entry say
"You're number fourteen thousand for today"

Oh, if you ain't got the do re mi, folks, you ain't got the do re mi
Why, you better go back to beautiful Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Georgia, Tennessee.
California is a garden of Eden, a paradise to live in or see
But believe it or not, you won't find it so hot
If you ain't got the do re mi

You want to buy you a home or a farm, that can't deal nobody harm
Or take your vacation by the mountains or sea
Don't swap your old cow for a car, you better stay right where you are
You better take this little tip from me
'Cause I look through the want ads every day
But the headlines on the papers always say

If you ain't got the do re mi, boys, you ain't got the do re mi
Why, you better go back to beautiful Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Georgia, Tennessee.
California is a garden of Eden, a paradise to live in or see

But believe it or not, you won't find it so hot
If you ain't got the do re mi

Overall Meaning

Woody Guthrie's song "Do-Re-Mi" tells the story of the many people leaving their homes back East to make their way to California during the Dust Bowl of the 1930s. These migrants hoped to find a better life in California and often believed they were headed to a land of plenty, but the reality was often different. The song's lyrics describe the difficulties that many migrants faced in finding work and housing, and the frustration that came with being just one of thousands of people trying to make a new start in a strange place.

The song's chorus, "Oh, if you ain't got the do re mi, folks, you ain't got the do re mi," highlights the importance of money in making a new life in California. Even though California was seen as a "garden of Eden, a paradise to live in or see," as the song puts it, migrants often found that without money, they couldn't make a new life for themselves. The song urges listeners not to trade their assets, such as their cows, for things like cars but to rather stay where they are and not fall into the trap to head to California with nothing.

Guthrie's song "Do-Re-Mi" is a poignant reminder of the struggles faced by people during the Dust Bowl migration. Although California represented the hope of a better life for many, the reality was often harsh and unforgiving. The song highlights the importance of having money and resources to make a new start, and serves as a reminder of the hardships that many migrants faced during this critical period in American history.

"Blowing into town in a junk Model-A with bald tires, no muffler and one
headlight … looking for quick work, with no questions asked and
preferably no tax deductions. Just get the cash, fill up at a cut-rate
gas station and hit the road, with a pint on the seat and Eddy Arnold on
the radio moaning good back-country tunes about home sweet home, that
Bluegrass sweetheart still waitin, and roses on Mama’s grave. They kept moving until one day in
the late 1930s they stood on the spine of a scrub-oak California hill
and looked down on the Pacific Ocean—the end of the road.”

@Paulo Hernanndizz well I don't believe in the democrats if that's what you are implying, but the two party system is currently the reality in our country and voting in the general is but one way to engage with the system.

So I vote for the democrats, not because the democrats are awesome but for harm mitigation. Beyond that call your senators and vote in primaries for progressive candidates.

If there was a genuine progressive movement in the republican party I would vote in their primary but there isn't.

Furthermore whilst many aspects of the democratic party establishment are beholden to lobbyists and I don't think they do enough at all, every piece of progressive legislation to help poor people that has passed in the last 100 years has come from the democratic party, usually forced by activists. There has not been any progressive republican movement since Teddy Roosevelt days.

So yah they both suck but one is worse.

@jamesu3816

@Paulo Hernanndizz okay yah ur just a right winger. Right wing talking points lol....

Welfare doesn't exist today really, welfare also did not cause the rise in fatherlessness from African American families and also welfare isn't exclusively used by African Americans and was available to all Americans.

Since bill Clinton and the republicans passed welfare reform in the 90s considerably less ppl get welfare and they get considerably less and you can only have it for a limited time.

So infact the scaling back of government benefits corresponds to the general rise in single family homes we have seen among all races in the last 40 years.

But it's still probably not the sole cause. Nor does it matter when we are talking about redistributing power to the working class.

Again imagine being a Woody Guthrie fan and spouting lame ass right wing talking points... Lol

@jamesu3816

@Paulo Hernanndizz another republican talking point lol hahaha bro ur a meme.

Yes many southern democrats were founders of the kkk, that was before the Dems passed the civil rights movement and the southern flip happened. Do you not know this? Lol

"I'm not a republican but let me just spout inaccurate republican talking points."

You got both: "the Dems founded the kkk" talking point with the "social media bias for the democrats" talking point all wrapped up in that last comment.

You gave yourself away.

Btw I did answer you didn't read.

@conure3029

Well, thousands of folks back east, they say,
Are leavin' home most ev'ry day,
And they're beatin' the hot old dusty way
To the California line.
'Cross the desert sands they roll,
A-getting out of that old dust bowl,
And they think they're going to a sugar bowl,
Here's what they find:
The police at the port of entry say,
"You're number fourteen thousand for today."
If you ain't got the do-re-mi, boys,
If you ain't got the do-re-mi,
Well you'd better go back to beautiful Texas,
Oklahoma, Georgia, Kansas, Tennessee.
California is a garden of Eden,
It's a paradise to live in or see.
But believe it or not,
You won't find it so hot,
If you ain't got the do-re-mi.
Well, if you want to buy you a home or farm,
That can't deal nobody harm,
Or take your vacations
By the mountains or sea,
Don't swap your old cow for a car,
You'd better stay right where you are;
Well you'd better take this little tip from me.
'Cause I look through the want ads every day,
And the headlines on the papers always say:
If you ain't got the do-re-mi, boys,
If you ain't got the do-re-mi,
Well you'd better go back to beautiful Texas,
Oklahoma, Georgia, Kansas, Tennessee.
California is a garden of Eden,
It's a paradise to live in or see.
But believe it or not,
You won't find it so hot,
If you ain't got the do-re-mi.
