Lindbergh
Woody Guthrie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Mister Charlie Lindbergh, he flew to old Berlin
Got 'im a big Iron Cross, and he flew right back again
To Washington, Washington

Misses Charlie Lindbergh, she come dressed in red
Said: "I'd like to sleep in that pretty White House bed
In Washington, Washington"
Lindy said to Annie: "We'll get there by and by
But we'll have to split the bed up with Wheeler, Clark, and Nye
In Washington, Washington"

Hitler wrote to Lindy, said "Do your very worst"
Lindy started an outfit that he called America First
In Washington, Washington

All around the country, Lindbergh, he did fly
Gasoline was paid for by Hoover, Clark, and Nye
In Washington, Washington

Lindy said to Hoover: "We'll do the same as France
Make a deal with Hitler, and then we'll get our chance
In Washington, Washington"

Then they had a meetin', and all the Firsters com
Come on a-walkin', they come on a-runnin'
In Washington, Washington

Yonder comes Father Coughlin, wearin' the silver chain
Cash on his stomach and Hitler on the brain
In Washington, Washington

Mister John L. Lewis would sit and straddle a fence
His daughter signed with Lindbergh, and we ain't seen her since
In Washington, Washington

Hitler said to Lindy: "Stall 'em all you can
Gonna bomb Pearl Harbor with the help of old Japan"
In Washington, Washington

Then on a December mornin', the bombs come from Japan
Wake Island and Pearl Harbor, kill fifteen hundred men
In Washington, Washington

Now Lindy tried to join the army, but they wouldn't let 'im in
'Fraid he'd sell to Hitler a few more million men
In Washington, Washington

So I'm a gonna tell you people: If Hitler's gonna be beat
The common workin' people has got to take the seat
In Washington, Washington

And I'm gonna tell you workers, 'fore you cash in your checks

They say "America First," but they mean "America Next!"
In Washington, Washington

Overall Meaning

The song “Lindbergh” by Woody Guthrie is a political commentary on American aviator Charles Lindbergh, his political ideologies, and his ties to Nazi Germany. The song describes how Lindbergh, after flying to Berlin in 1938, received a prestigious Iron Cross medal from Adolf Hitler, which he brought back to Washington, D.C. The song also mentions Lindbergh’s wife, who had aspirations of sleeping in the White House bed, as well as Lindbergh’s role in creating the isolationist group America First, which opposed the United States’ entry into World War II.

Guthrie’s lyrics reflect his staunch opposition to Lindbergh’s isolationist views and his fear that the United States was being drawn into a web of fascist domination. Guthrie portrays Lindbergh as a figure who supports Hitler and who is willing to work with him to secure American interests. However, Guthrie also calls on the American people to reject Lindbergh’s philosophy and to instead take an active role in resisting fascism.

The song "Lindbergh" by Woody Guthrie was written in 1940, two years after Lindbergh's flight to Berlin and his meeting with Hitler.

Guthrie was a fervent political activist and his music often reflected his political beliefs.

The song was written in response to Lindbergh's involvement in America First, a grassroots organization that opposed the country's entry into World War II.

The lyrics criticize Lindbergh's isolationist stance and his expressed admiration for Hitler and Nazi Germany.

Guthrie used the song to urge Americans to reject Lindbergh's philosophy and to take an active role in resisting fascism.

Some historians believe that Guthrie's song helped turn public opinion against Lindbergh and contributed to his loss of influence in the United States.

The song has been covered by numerous artists over the years, including Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, and Joan Baez.

"Lindbergh" is often cited as one of Guthrie's most overtly political songs.

The song's lyrics reflect Guthrie's deep concern over the rise of fascism in Europe and his belief that the United States needed to take a stronger stance against it.

Guthrie's music has been widely influential in American popular culture, and his songs continue to be sung and celebrated today.

ThawedTroglodyteJury

@ rupi capra How can the song be "slander" when the Lindbergh events you're glorifying/exaggerating occurred after this song was made? Meanwhile everything detailed in the song is 100% fact, and is mild in exposing the fascist apologist that Charles Lindbergh really was.

George

@Andrew McLaughlin It's almost as though children can make choices independent of their parents

Zed Dravot

Beautiful.

Markus Garvey

You right man. I don't know what I can say because you've already said... Bravo mon gars

Brianne Ingraham

@Rupi capra, Lindbergh was not "fighting in the Pacific" . He signed on as a technical advisor and was never at the controls or in any danger. Hew was an avowed racist and anti semite who believed in euthanasia of physically and mentally impaired people, and the sterilization of anyone of questionable genes. He said himself that having studied breeding on his farm that Anne Morrow had good genes and that's why he married her.

Stephen Jackson

@John Dean Lindbergh did fly, always with veteran pilots who were under orders to “to get him into the newspapers and not get him killed”. He did shoot down one Japanese aircraft, an older Ki-51 observation aircraft. Lindy was flying with a formation of P-38s including the group commander, squadron commander, and ace Major Richard “Dick” Bong. The other P-38s dropped back to cover while Lindbergh shot it down. The encounter was then portrayed in the press as being against several Zeroes.
