Little Black Train
Woody Guthrie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's a little black train a-comin'
Comin' down the track
You gotta ride that little black train,
But it ain't a gonna bring you back.

You may be a bar-room gambler
And cheat your way through life
You can't cheat that little black train
Or beat this final ride.

You silken bar-room ladies,
Dressed in your worldly pride
You've gotta ride that little black train
That's comin' in the night.

Your million dollar fortune,
Your mansion glittering white
You can't take it with you
When the train moves in the night.

Get ready for your savior,
Anf fix your business right
You've got to ride that little black train
That makes this final ride.

You silken bar-room ladies,
Dressed in your worldly pride
You've gotta ride that little black train
That's comin' in the night.

You may be a bar-room gambler
And cheat your way through life
You can't cheat that little black train
Or beat this final ride.

There's a little black train a-comin'
Comin' down the track

You gotta ride that little black train,
But it ain't a gonna bring you back

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Woody Guthrie's Little Black Train suggest a theme of mortality, and the inevitability of death. The song is written in a call and response format, a style common in gospel and spiritual music, in which a leader sings a phrase and the chorus or audience responds. In this song, Guthrie poses as the leader, urging his listeners to prepare for their final ride on the little black train which is coming for them all.

Through these lyrics, Guthrie makes use of imagery that is religious in nature. The idea of the "little black train" as a symbol of death alludes to the concept of the "death train" which is referenced in the Bible as the vehicle through which people will be taken to hell. The lyrics suggest that death comes for everyone, irrespective of their wealth, status or accomplishments. The lines "Your million dollar fortune, Your mansion glittering white, You can't take it with you, When the train moves in the night" imply that even the richest and most successful among us will one day leave behind all worldly possessions and facades.

Overall, Little Black Train is a poignant song that reinforces the reality that death is an inevitable part of life, no matter who we are or what we do.

There’s an old black train a'comin’
Scraping long the iron
You don’t need no ticket, boys
It’ll take you when it’s time                                                                                                                Come on now, young strangers
Weren’t you someone’s son?
How’d you find this depot
‘cause it ain’t where you belong
You will pass a graveyard
Stones worn by the years
The train’ll stop a minute
But don’t let it leave you here
 The coachman is my brother
The engineer’s my friend
They’ll get you more acquainted
by the time you reach the end
This journey is a long one
It’ll take you all around
Life rushing by your window
Before it lays you down
Now, where this old train’s going
You can’t come back from
You can leave your baggage here
Because we’ll need it when you’re gone

Listening to one Woody Guthrie song after another...classics.

polyhex

This was in Over the Garden Wall! Very shortly, but it hit an extremely heavy note.

Slime Privilege

it sounds like it but the lyrics are different, and this is the only recording of Guthrie's little black train. i think one of the guys who made the music for the show probably made that song for the show and gave it the same feeling of Guthrie's, since i can't find any other song that matches the lyrics in OtGW
