Ramblin' Round
Woody Guthrie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Ramblin' around your city
Ramblin' around your town
I never see a friend I know
As I go ramblin' 'round, boys
As I go ramblin' 'round

My sweetheart and my parents
I left in my old hometown
I'm out to do the best I can
As I go ramblin' round, boys
As I go ramblin' round

The peach trees they are loaded
And the limbs are bending down
I pick 'em all day for a dollar, boys
As I go a ramblin' 'round, boys
As I go a ramblin' 'round

Sometimes the fruit gets rotten
Falls down on the ground
There's a hungry mouth for every peach
As I go a ramblin' 'round, boys
As I go a ramblin' 'round

I wish that I could marry
I wish that I could settle down
But I can't save a penny, boys
As I go a ramblin' 'round
As I go a ramblin' 'round

My mother prayed that I would be
A man of some renown
But I'm just a refugee

As I go a ramblin' 'round, boys
As I go a ramblin' 'round

Overall Meaning

The song "Ramblin' Round" by Woody Guthrie is a simple yet powerful expression of the life of a migrant worker. The singer is constantly wandering from place to place, never seeing anyone he knows, leaving behind his loved ones and hometown to try to make a living as best he can. He describes the hard work of picking peaches for a meager wage, hoping to earn enough to survive. The image of the fruit trees bending under the weight of the fruit, and the fact that there are hungry mouths for every peach, reflects the harsh reality of the competition for scarce jobs and resources.

The song also expresses a longing for stability and a sense of home. The singer wishes he could settle down and marry, but the constant struggle to make ends meet as a migrant worker makes this impossible. The final lines, where the singer reflects on his mother's hopes for him to become a man of renown, are particularly poignant. Instead, he is just a refugee, wandering from place to place with no real home or secure future.

Overall, "Ramblin' Round" is a poignant reflection on the lives of migrant workers, who move from place to place in search of a livelihood and never truly feel at home anywhere. It highlights the struggles, hardships and resilience of these workers who are uprooted from their homeland in search of a better future.

I was looking up Woody Guthrie this morning and who has posted the music here? My author friend T. A. Sedlak! Strange... the last time I remember seeing him he was tossing chunks of weed around at the annual Marijuana harvest festival in Madison, and patronizing the local NORML meetings. What are the chances he would be the one posting the music I'm listening to?
