Stackolee
Woody Guthrie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The end of the summer, down in New Orleans
Should've called, got caught up in the scene
Ain't nothin' wrong, ain't a damn thing right
Gonna be comin' home but baby, not tonight

The reason I'm stayin' is every thing's swayin'
It feels too good to leave
Pay all the bullshit, send me the receipts
I don't know where I'll be

The bayou's callin', the gypsy's out tonight
French quarter lamps are burnin', lamps are burning bright
Now I'm the kind of man, that will throw caution to the wind, all night long
I'll be here 'til the end, the caravan awaits me in a place within my mind
Wish you could be here, I guess another time, oh another time

Woo, hoo, yeah, yeah, ain't life grand
All the pushin', and huggin', and pushin', and tuggin'
And woo, hoo, yeah, yeah, ain't life grand
All the pissin' and moanin', and jerkin' me off
I said, woo, hoo, yeah, yeah, ain't life grand
Oh, ain't life grand

Oh woo, hoo, yeah, yeah, ain't life grand
All the drinkin', and takin', and fakin' it all
I said, woo, hoo, yeah, yeah, ain't life grand
All the touchin', and feelin', and bumpin', and squealin'

Now woo, hoo, oh yeah, ain't life grand
All the kickin', and screamin', all the lyin', and cheatin'
Now, woo, hoo, yeah, yeah, ain't life grand
Ain't life grand, ain't life grand

Ain't it grand baby? Ain't life grand baby?
Ain't life grand mama? Sweet daddy grand
Mama grand, brother grand, woman grand

Papa grand, granny grand, baby grand
Oh, I need a damn gram

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of the song Stackolee by Woody Guthrie are about a man who is spending the end of his summer in New Orleans and finds himself caught up in the vibrant scene there. The singer knows he should call home but he's too swept up in the good times to do it. He admits that there's nothing necessarily wrong but also nothing right about his situation. He won't be coming home tonight because he's having too much fun. The bayou and the gypsies are calling and the French quarter lamps burn bright. The singer is the type to throw caution to the wind, enjoying himself all night long until the end.

The song shows the singer's love of the pleasures that life has to offer, even if they include drinking, taking and faking it all or kickin', screamin', lyin', and cheating. He sings, "ain't life grand," as he embraces all parts of life, the good and the bad. However, he also acknowledges that he needs a "damn gram," perhaps referring to a gram of something to help him keep going. The song portrays a carefree and indulgent lifestyle that celebrates living in the present, giving in to temptations, and doing what feels good in the moment.

Thanks for posting this. I've heard dozens of versions (of course), but never this one. I should've known Woody recorded his own version of one of America's most important songs.

David the Dusty Hampton

THE first song about "Stack" Lee Shelton(a St. Louis pimp who shot Billy Lions on Christmas in 1895 for stealing his hat) was done by Charlie Lee(1897) but was made famous by Mississippi John Hurt(1928) and Lloyd Price(1959). Stack is buried in St. Louis at Greenwood Cemetery off St. Louis Avenue

Fabio Ritondo

I knew Mississippi John Hurt's version, Doc Watson's, Taj Mahal's but I didn't knew that my favourite folksinger did a version of my fav american folk song. I am Sicilian but I love american folk music

Justin CB

Ever heard Long Cleve Reed & the downhome boys's version. It's unique & close to being my favorite version.

Michael Hattem

Long Cleve Reed's from 1927 is my favorite.

OGKush2010

give Samuel L Jackson's version a listen, from the prospective of Stack-O-Lee.
