Two Good Men
Woody Guthrie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Two good men a long time gone,
Two good men a long time gone
(Two good men a long time gone, oh, gone),
Sacco, Vanzetti a long time gone,
Left me here to sing this song.

Say, there, did you hear the news?
Sacco worked at trimming shoes;
Vanzetti was a peddling man,
Pushed his fish cart with his hands.

Sacco was born across the sea
Somewhere over in Italy;
Vanzetti was born of parents fine,
Drank the best Italian wine.

Sacco sailed the sea one day,
Landed up in Boston Bay;
Vanzetti sailed the ocean blue,
Landed up in Boston, too.

Sacco's wife three children had,
Sacco was a family man;
Vanzetti was a dreaming man,
His book was always in his hand.

Sacco earned his bread and butter
Being the factory's best shoe cutter;
Vanzetti spoke both day and night,
Told the workers how to fight.

I'll tell you if you ask me
'Bout this payroll robbery;
Two clerks was killed by the shoe factory
On the street in South Braintree.

Judge Thayer told his friends around
He would cut the radicals down;
Anarchist bastards was the name
Judge Thayer called these two good men.

I'll tell you the prosecutors' names,
Katsman, Adams, Williams, Kane;
The judge and lawyers strutted down,
They done more tricks than circus clowns.

Vanzetti docked here in 1908;
He slept along the dirty streets,
He told the workers ?Organize?
And on the electric chair he dies.

All you people ought to be like me,
And work like Sacco and Vanzetti;
And every day find some ways to fight
On the union side for workers' rights.

I've got no time to tell this tale,
The dicks and bulls are on my trail;

But I'll remember these two good men
That died to show me how to live.

All you people in Suassos Lane
Sing this song and sing it plain.

All you folks that's coming along,
Jump in with me, and sing this song.

Overall Meaning

"Two Good Men" is a song written by Woody Guthrie that pays homage to two Italian anarchists named Ferdinando Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti. These two men became notable for the controversy surrounding their 1927 murder trial in Massachusetts. They were accused of robbery and murder, and their case became an international cause celebre based on the belief that they were convicted for their political beliefs rather than the evidence.

The lyrics of the song highlight the lives of these two men and their contributions to society. They were both hard-working men who were passionate about their beliefs and would not compromise their values. Sacco worked hard as a shoe cutter to provide for his family, while Vanzetti spent his time educating people about workers’ rights. The song ends with a call to action for people to continue fighting for the rights of workers and to remember the legacy of these two men who died for their beliefs.

The lyrics also reference the corrupt justice system of the time, where Judge Thayer was rumored to have a personal vendetta against the two men. The prosecutors, including Katsman, Adams, Williams, and Kane, are also mentioned as being responsible for the conviction of the two men. The song touches on themes of injustice, political beliefs, and the power of the collective voice.

At the time there was no justice and really more racism.
Fortunately things are changed and nowadays we Italians are at least respected for what we are. But still there are many that continue to call us in such old terms: "mafia", "Dago", "Tony"... Not to mention those wo still portraits us as cowards, criminals and weak in war.
But things are still changing. Nobody's cared about our culture and history before, today instead, it's motif of proud and honor.
Sacco and Vanzetti are just two voices in a long list of important Italian persons who have made history. After all, without them the Americans would not have noticed the state of their justice and would have never changed too.
Thinking that the same Mussolini at the time asked for mercy for them... And after so many persecutions and injustices perpetrated against our people, it was not mistake nor surprise why Italy decided to raise and fight during WW2.
We developed our racism those years, alongside with many other countries and nations that still today react embarrassed when they remember those years of fear and darkness for human civilization.
There was justice for nobody.
There was no satisfaction for anyone.
We all suffered and ultimately failed.
In a way or another, all our goals and purposes was broken by the reality of war.
That's a lesson that today can return useful, when we approaching to face Russia and its expansionist ambitions. There are a lot of "Sacco and Vanzetti" both in Russia and in Ukraine that needs our help.

This is a stunning song. The Sacco-Vanzetti judicial murder is still relevant today and ought to be studied in schools. Viva l'anarchia!

It's 100 years since their trial started. I hope everyone seeing this is inspired to continue their fight.

I love Woody Guthrie. Sacco and Vanzetti were comrades. Rest In Peace. From a proud anarchist from Greece.

Spadecaller

Historians have not reached a consensus regarding their guilt or innocence , but most historians acknowledge that the trial was so politicized that justice was not executed appropriately.

Fuzzy Dunlop

Their spirits live on in the throngs of young people around the globe who take to the streets and challenge the evil of Authoritarianism. Stronger now than almost any other time in modern history.

What so many Italian Americans today forget is that there was a time and a place where they were seen as lesser, too. We should not scoff at those that yearn for their rights and civil liberties.

Patrick Wall

Great blues song and so true in all our countries. Workers are supposed to be superman but that is not enough for the greedy employers/bankers/government who belittle us.

Hasan-Woody Guthrie

Two Good Men Says it All..  We Won't Forget Sacco & Vanzetti.

Yoseman1

Just awesome. History will say Woody was one of the greatest people of the 20th century. Sacco and Vanzetti do not get the respect they deserve.

Peter Renkl

A good song about two good men, sung by a good man! Are we good listeners?
