Vigilante Man
Woody Guthrie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Have you seen that vigilante man?
Have you seen that vigilante man?
Have you seen that vigilante man?
I been hearin' his name all over the land.

Well, what is a vigilante man?
Tell me, what is a vigilante man?
Has he got a gun and a club in his hand?
Is that is a vigilante man?

Rainy night down in the engine house,
Sleepin' just as still as a mouse,
Man come along an' he chased us out in the rain.
Was that a vigilante man?

Stormy days we passed the time away,
Sleepin' in some good warm place.
Man come along an' we give him a little race.
Was that a vigilante man?

Preacher Casey was just a workin' man,
And he said, "Unite all you working men."
Killed him in the river some strange man.
Was that a vigilante man?

Oh, why does a vigilante man,
Why does a vigilante man
Carry that sawed-off shot-gun in his hand?
Would he shoot his brother and sister down?

I rambled 'round from town to town,
I rambled 'round from town to town,
And they herded us around like a wild herd of cattle.
Was that the vigilante men?

Have you seen that vigilante man?

Have you seen that vigilante man?
I've heard his name all over this land.

Overall Meaning

Woody Guthrie’s “Vigilante Man” is a song that questions the role of vigilante justice in American society. The song questions the motives behind vigilante violence and seeks to unveil the true face of those who take the law into their own hands. The first verse opens with the question, “Have you seen that vigilante man?” This is repeated three times and appears to be a rhetorical question. The lyrics suggest that this character is well known, and his notoriety is spreading throughout the country. “Well, what is a vigilante man?” Guthrie inquires in the second verse. He makes a distinction between someone who carries a gun or club as a tool of violence, and someone who acts in defense of others.

In the third verse, Guthrie recalls a rainy night in an engine house and how a man chased them out in the rain. He questions if this man was a vigilante. The fourth verse recalls stormy days spent sleeping in some good warm places. A man comes along, and they give him a little race. Was he a vigilante man? The song’s fifth verse is about Preacher Casey, a working man who attempted to unite all working people. The preacher was killed by some strange man in the river. The last two verses refer to Guthrie himself, and how he rambled around from town to town being herded like a wild herd of cattle.
