Worried Man Blues
Woody Guthrie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

[Chorus]
It takes a worried man to sing a worried song
It takes a worried man to sing a worried song
It takes a worried man to sing a worried song
I'm worried now, but I won't be worried long

I went across the river and I laid down to sleep
I went across the river and I laid down to sleep
I went across the river and I laid down to sleep
When I woke up, I had shackles on my feet

Twenty-one links of chain around my leg
Twenty-one links of chain around my leg
Twenty-one links of chain around my leg
And on each link, is initial of my name

[Chorus]

I asked that judge, what's gonna be my fine
I asked the judge, tell me, what's gonna be my fine
I asked the judge, tell me, what's gonna be my fine
Twenty one years on the Rocky Mountain Line

Twenty-one years to pay my awful crime
Twenty-one years to pay my awful crime
Twenty-one years to pay my awful crime
Twenty-one years and I still got ninety-nine

[Chorus]

If anybody ask you, "Well who made up this song?"
If anybody ask you, "Well who made up this song?"
If anybody ask you, "Well who made up this song?"
Tell 'em t'was me and I done been here and gone

[Chorus]

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Woody Guthrie's song "Worried Man Blues" paint a picture of a man struggling to come to terms with the situation he finds himself in. The chorus is repeated three times, emphasizing the central point of the song: that it takes a worried man to sing a worried song. This idea is reinforced by the verses that follow, which describe a man who has been apprehended and is now chained up, facing a long prison sentence. He asks the judge what his punishment will be and is told he will have to spend twenty-one years on the Rocky Mountain Line, paying for his "awful crime." The repetition of the words "Twenty-one" emphasizes the length of time he will be incarcerated.

The song's final verse sees the singer reflecting on the origin of the song. He asserts that he is the author and that he has already "been here and gone." This suggests that the song has been passed down through generations of "worried men" struggling with their own troubles. Overall, the song reminds us that we are all prone to worry and that sometimes singing about our hardships can help ease our fears.

rutaloot:  Woody Guthrie suffered a lot,  survived the Dustbowl in the midwest,
Love sickness,  seen discriminated by other white people in California because they were poor, and survived all of that.   I hope you overcame your difficulties by
this time.  If Woody survived, anybody can survive!

I wish he would've lived a longer life than he did. What a worried man. What a great man. Rest easy brother.

@MerchantEyes

It takes a worried man to sing a worried song. No pampered young popstar can ever sing a song this way.
