I first saw this video pretty much when it came out, maybe Feb of 2014. I have re-watched it so many times, at one point I was watching it like 4 times a day. This is my take away. Lyrically the song starts at the club “I've come far/Far from the death of the suburbs/To this dirty place here on my own” but the video choses to start in “the death of the suburbs” which is a good move because it allows for the cast to be established while the song focuses on just one character. These aren’t the best people these are the lower rung people who are trying to connect with someone, anyone who will listen to them and they’ve created gimmicks for themselves to give an identity for when they go to the club “I'm dressed up in these clothes/Is someone gonna drag me home tonight”, except for flag man who I always viewed as the main character and someone who’s trying to get into this club scene “First light, first light is hard undiscovered”. Once the club scene starts there’s a lot of small arcs that you see unfold, or single actions that become meaningful when viewed from the universal backstory that has been established in first min and a half. This is where the themes start to emerge.
1. Universality of the human struggle: Yes everyone here is a freak in their own unique way but at everyone’s core they’re all alone and trying to find someone.
2. Refusal to accept this: You have the dancing bird boy who puts himself out there in an attempt to fight “against natural selection” to get ”a tender light will find me” and he is ostracized for it even though he’s just like everyone else in the room. There’s also a shot at 2:34 where an awkward boy approaches and awkward girl and she looks at him like he’s a freak when it looks like they are meant for each other. Especially after seeing 2:31 where yellow girl meets the tall yellow guy and you have a visual sign of people grouping up. There’s so much isolation going on but it’s just because...
3. Fear of connection: they want “The truth of a total stranger” they aren’t looking for someone long term just “the arms of another/Somebody I could turn to in my bed” “Cause tonight I need some validation/Well no not forever, just once”.
4. Overemphasis on the superficial, fear of what’s underneath: You can see this in obsession for a gimmick, an over focus on appearances, how fast everyone is to judge other people.
I like to view Luci’s video for Vance Joy “Mess is Mine” as a continuation of this. There’s another large cast of characters that are all seeking connection, usually not in the best way, but they’re trying.
