SPECTRUM
Wreck and Reference Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
a fraud elemental
rent from flames
unripe and unsteady
it adorned
with muted palette
a spectrum restrained
and blurred
Swaddled in embroidery
so dear
diverting critical
gaze
wrought now
but take to it
with hammer
chisel hatchet
and blade
Recast this iron
work without remorse
fashion a new frame
do not sleep
burn scars are medals
in this solitary race
The lyrics to Wreck and Reference's song "Spectrum" are quite abstract and open to interpretation. The lines "From this forge, a fraud elemental, rent from flames" could be interpreted as the creation of a false identity or persona, born out of difficult circumstances or hardship. The following lines, "unripe and unsteady, it adorned with muted palette, a spectrum restrained and blurred" seem to suggest that this identity is not fully-formed or fully-realized, and that its expression is limited in some way.
The second verse seems to be a call to action. The lines "Swaddled in embroidery so dear, diverting critical gaze" suggest that this false identity is something cherished, but that it needs to be examined more critically. The lines "wrought now, but take to it with hammer, chisel hatchet, and blade" suggest that there is a need for some kind of creative destruction or rebuilding. The final lines "Recast this iron, work without remorse, fashion a new frame, do not sleep, burn scars are medals in this solitary race" suggest that this process will be painful and difficult, but ultimately necessary in order to forge a new identity or sense of self.
