Hush Little Baby
Wretch 32 Feat. Ed Sheeran Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hush little baby don't you cry
I said hush little baby don't you cry
I said hush little baby don't you cry, no
I said hush little baby don't you cry

I'm saying hush little baby don't you cry
Daddy ain't sure if he can raise you right
I ain't even good with saving my money
Why should I think I can save your life?
And the whole family's gonna think I'm a devil, I don't wanna see my angels eyes
I say this with one hand on my heart, guilt ain't gonna make me change my mind
My first thoughts, were the worst thoughts, running 'round my head in circles
The worlds gonna hate me for saying this, but patience is a virtue
So we don't have to rush for our first youth, we can take time do rehearsals
And I ain't acting this is personal, and I ain't doing this just to hurt you

I should say goodbye, before I say hello
So darling hold me, closely, tonight
Because if you open your eyes, I'll never let you go
Moving slowly, we'll both sleep tonight
And we'll just be dreaming 'til you wake me up

When I'm telling her about raving
She's telling me about cravings
I want her to just get the message
I don't wanna have to be so blatant
So I told her my life ain't balanced
Yeah, said the time ain't right
She said god's clock's the only one that matters
And it's about time I tried, yeah and if I listen to my family
Then they'll be a new addition to my family
I can't help feeling peer pressured, everybody's looking down but they don't understand me
And everyone's so suggestive, I'm getting mixed messages, but nobody's rang me
Huh, I'm saying this ain't a game, but I say the wrong thing and everyone wants to hang me

I should say goodbye, before I say hello
So darling hold me, closely, tonight
Because if you open your eyes, I'll never let you go
Moving slowly, we'll both sleep tonight
And we'll just be dreaming 'til you wake me up

Hush little baby don't you cry
I said hush little baby don't you cry
I said hush little baby don't you cry, no
I said hush little baby don't you cry

I know I should say goodbye, before I say hello
Darling hold me, closely, tonight
Because if you open your eyes, I'll never let you go

Moving slowly, we'll both sleep tonight
And we'll just be dreaming 'til you wake me up

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Hush Little Baby" by Wretch 32 featuring Ed Sheeran delve into the thoughts and worries that come along with having a child. From the very beginning, Wretch 32 addresses the baby, telling it not to cry. He admits that he is unsure if he can raise the child properly and that he is not good at saving money, so how can he save its life? He also worries about what his family will think of him and fears that he is the devil in his child's eyes. However, he knows that guilt will not change his mind, and he wants to take his time to ensure that everything is done right. The chorus of the song is a plea for the baby to sleep soundly and dream until it is time to wake up.

Throughout the rest of the song, Wretch 32 explores the pressures he feels from society to have a child and how he is getting mixed messages from everyone around him. He talks about wanting the woman he is with to understand him without him having to be so blatant. They speak about their different perspectives on life, with Wretch 32 feeling that his life is unbalanced and the time isn't right for a child, while the woman tells him that God's clock is the only one that matters. He ends the song with the same plea for the baby to sleep soundly as he clings to the hope that everything will work out in the end.

In summary, "Hush Little Baby" is a poignant song that speaks to the doubts and fears that come along with becoming a parent. It is a reflection of the apprehensions that many people have, but it also carries with it a message of hope and the knowledge that things will work out.

This song still hits deep. Lost my mam few years ago and developed a fear of dying and leaving my girls with no dad. Not fully over it but randomly this song brings comfort.

@skarozil

Build for them. Work in decades. Death is coming we are all together in that. We have 24hrs in a day. Let's use ours to build for them. I know your fear, but fear holds us back. Go for it, build for your babies, hush them and I hope they don't cry. I hope our children smile knowing we did out best and they are prepared for the World which left better than when we found it.
