The founders of the Wu-Tang Clan were RZA, GZA, and Ol' Dirty Bastard, who had previously formed the group Force of the Imperial Master (later known as All In Together Now after the release of a popular single by that name). The group attracted the attention of some notable figures in the industry, including Biz Markie, but did not manage to secure a record deal. After the crew dissolved, GZA and RZA (then known as Prince Rakeem) embarked on their solo careers with Cold Chillin' Records and Tommy Boy Records respectively, but to little success. Their frustration with the workings of the hip hop music industry would provide the main inspiration to Wu-Tang Clan's revolutionary business plan. According to The Wu-Tang Manual, at the group's inception, RZA promised the members that if he had total control of the Wu-Tang empire, it would conquer the hip hop world within a dynastic cycle, after which he would relinquish his total control.
Wu-Tang Clan was gradually assembled in late 1992 from friends and accomplices from around Staten Island, New York, with RZA as the de-facto leader and the group's main producer. Two of the cousins, GZA (pronounced Jizza) and RZA (pronounced Rizza), created their new Wu-Tang aliases by mimicking the sound that the words "genius" and "razor" would make when scratched on a turntable.
"Wu-Tang" comes from the name of the Taoist holy mountain Wu Dang in northwest Hubei Province in central China; it was also the site of the Ming Dynasty Purple Imperial City built during the reign of the Yongle Emperor in the early 15th century. RZA and Ol' Dirty Bastard adopted the name for the group after seeing the kung fu film Shaolin and Wu Tang, which features a school of warriors trained in Wu-Tang style. The group's debut album loosely adopted a Shaolin vs. Wu-Tang theme, dividing the album into Shaolin and Wu-Tang sections and using dialogue excerpts as skits.
The group have also developed various backronyms for the name (as hip hop pioneers like KRS-One and Big Daddy Kane did with their names), including "We Usually Take All the Niggas' Garments," "Witty Unpredictable Talent and Natural Game" and "Wisdom, Universe, Truth, Allah, Nation, and God".
Method Man has also mentioned that the "Wu" is the sound a sword makes when cutting through the air, and "Tang" is the sound it makes against a shield.
The Clan first became known to hip hop fans, and to major record labels, in 1993 (see 1993 in music) following the release of the independent single "Protect Ya Neck", which immediately gave the group a sizeable underground following. Though there was some difficulty in finding a record label that would sign Wu-Tang Clan while still allowing each member to record solo albums with other labels, Loud/RCA finally agreed, releasing their debut album, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), in late 1993. This album was popular and critically-acclaimed, though it took some time to gain momentum. Though hip hop had long had a gritty texture, the surreal aggression and minimalist production of 36 Chambers nevertheless had a huge impact on the genre, and was to prove massively influential over the next decade. By the beginning of the 21st century, the album had become a regular fixture on "Best Albums of the 90s" lists as well as a frequent choice for "Best Albums of All Time" lists. The success of Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) established the group as a creative and influential force in early 1990s hip hop, allowing GZA, RZA, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Method Man, Ol' Dirty Bastard, Inspectah Deck, U-God, and Masta Killa to negotiate solo contracts.

Black Dawn
Wu-Tang Clan Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Of the automobile and organized labor
Was seen as a promised land
For twenty-five years
Sudden Blacks migrated North, seeking middle-class prosperity
But by the summer of 1967
Much of that hope had turned to hopelessness (yo)
Put your Wallabies back on, it's time for a swarm
You that wrong, get your Timberlands blacked on
Jungle fatigues bulletproof vests back on
Yo, I blow dimes all up in your way
Spit a dart in your face
You don't know me in the first place
My birth date equivalent to forty earthquakes
I smirk gray, poli' on streets where the motors leak
Kids hold heat 'cause they place is cold
My weight's in gold, turn about face behold
The street scroll, never work slow, said wise old
Elder, I hear beats like Helen Keller
Feel 'em straight out the speaker to my animated blood flow
Pass records around like contaminated needle, heave-ho
My sound heavy like tree fall, I flee halls, bleed through gauze
Carry Grim Reaper in millimeter form and spill a liter for him
Born to take any soul
Relentless Henny flow, chops heads like guillotines
Smoke Philly's with my queen, I'm still in the machine
Dt's at my day job, talking bout the date room
They may drown me, my shadow too vicious
Can't keep 'em around me, hide 'em under the hoody
He live like Whitney, intelligent like Eli
We ride like the Jitney
Pass time like a clock used for a Frisbee
George Roll, Wallstreet, that's the shoes that fit me
Yo, you that wrong, I crack a sky, a black dawn
Put your Wallabies back on, it's time for a swarm
You that wrong, get your Timberlands blacked on
Jungle fatigues bulletproof vests back on
Burn a building, Wu-Tang bats all in the sky
Causing a black day, I see through the eye
Of a tornado, false feed with greater ladles
Tower of Babel labels, follow room when I call the chrome
Go home, lord, I slice you
I engineer trains of thought, diabolical molecules
Light skin marksmen, part ten in your follicles
Twelve men equipped, seven rappers can vouch too
About you fuckin' with me, my Clan emblem
Remember where it came from 'fore I cock and aim one
Dart at the cranium, fuck up your suit coat
These rhymes I wrote, aimed at the Ivory Coast
Piano keys I tap like a nervous child's knee
I served in the streets for the army of God
Bring your bomb squad, national guard, I'm passin' through bars
Escapin' prison, armed with great vision
God-given heredity, better be
The armed bank robber with pedigree
Yo, you that wrong, I crack a sky, a black dawn
Put your Wallabies back on, it's time for a swarm
You that wrong, get your Timberlands blacked on
Jungle fatigues bulletproof vests back on
Think Differently
The lyrics of Wu-Tang Clan's song "Black Dawn" touch on themes of racial inequality, social unrest, and personal determination. The first set of lyrics discusses the historical migration of African Americans from the South to the North, particularly to Detroit, Michigan, the birthplace of the automobile industry and organized labor. This movement was fueled by the hopes of finding middle-class prosperity. However, by 1967, the year of the Detroit riots, these hopes had turned into hopelessness.
The second set of lyrics, delivered by one of the Wu-Tang Clan members, expresses a sense of rebellion and defiance. The line "Yo, you that wrong, I crack a sky, a black dawn" suggests a disruptive force rising up against injustice. The mention of specific footwear brands like "Wallabies" and "Timberlands" references the street culture and fashion associated with the African American community. The lyrics convey a message of empowerment by reclaiming symbols of identity and strength.
The following lines are filled with poetic language and vivid imagery. The artist describes himself as a powerful force, referencing earthquakes, anonymous acts of violence, and the immense weight of gold. There is a sense of relentless energy and determination portrayed, as the artist's sound is compared to a falling tree and his presence likened to the Grim Reaper. These metaphors capture the intensity and drive that the artist possesses, ready to take on anyone or anything.
The final set of lyrics further emphasizes the artist's defiance and mastery. He mentions burning buildings and bats, symbolizing both destruction and the Wu-Tang Clan's iconic logo. He sees through the chaos of the world and claims the power to engineer thoughts and manipulate molecules. The references to light skin marksmen and Ivory Coast highlight the global reach and influence of the artist's words. The lyrics display a confidence in his abilities and a challenge to anyone who dares to oppose him.
Overall, the lyrics of "Black Dawn" delve into a range of societal and personal issues. From the historical struggles of the African American community to individual resilience and determination, the song captures the complexity of these themes. It speaks to the power of art and personal expression in the face of adversity.
