Jean moved to Brooklyn, New York when he was nine, then to Northern New Jersey, where he began playing the guitar and studying jazz in his high school. In 1987, Jean, his friend (so close they told people they were cousins growing up) Prakazrel Michel (Pras) and his classmate, Lauryn Hill, formed a group called the Tranzlator Crew before becoming The Fugees. Wyclef worked as a cabdriver.
Recently he has been finding success as a collaborator - with his turn on Shakira's 2006 track 'Hips Don't Lie' hitting number one in many countries around the world.
In August of 2010, Jean announced his intent to seek the presidency of Haiti. This move came after his increasingly-high profile humanitarian work in the wake of the earthquake that devastated that nation.

In the middle of the night
Cowards on the telephone
Say I've got a pretty daughter with a pretty wife
So I got no choice
Got on my chopper, got my vest on
(Choppered up, vest on)
(Choppered up, vest on)
Got on my chopper, got my vest on
Yeah, I'm ridin' towards my enemy
Before they come and get my family
Biggie used to ask what's beef
It's when my own countryman wanna kill me
I used to rip a flag in the air like I'm part of the set
But now it seems like the same set is givin' me death threats
All I wanted to be was Commander-in-chief
But it seems like they wanna see me six feet deep
But no weapon used against me shall prosper
(Prosper, prosper, prosper, prosper)
Death threats
In the middle of the night
(What they said?)
Cowards on the telephone
Say I've got a pretty daughter with a pretty wife
So I got no choice
Got on my chopper, got my vest on
(Choppered up, vest on)
Got on my chopper, got my vest on
(Choppered up, vest on)
Got on my chopper, got my vest on
Yeah, I'm ridin' towards my enemy
Before they come and get my family
Then they labeled me
(A populist)
Pushed the decision back before they kicked me out the race
So they met in Peurto Princess in secrecy
They said they heard a rumor that I met with Irish Steve
But all I wanted to be was Commander-in-chief
So when the food price rise, everyone still eats
Give them some books, make sure everybody reads
Illiteracy is modern day slavery
Death threats
In the middle of the night
(What they said?)
Cowards on the telephone
Say I've got a pretty daughter with a pretty wife
So I got no choice
Got on my chopper, got my vest on
(Choppered up, vest on)
Got on my chopper, got my vest on
(Choppered up, vest on)
Got on my chopper, got my vest on
I'm ridin' towards my enemy
Before they come and get my family
The coin that I bet heads on, been tails all along
On both sides of the coin
So I'm careful who I eat with
'Cause if I'm poisoned, a dead man can't get elected
Preacher laid his hands on me, said it's a prophesy
But like Bijou Banton, it's my destiny
Yo, and I kept the crowd calm
But they runnin' out of patience, they got short talk and long arms
We disgrace, story come from photo press
All the music where the scene gets tense
And the perpetrator says, "If you love your life
You would take the next plane but you can't survive"
You see I won't get the Peace Prize
'Cause I got a rifle hangin' by my bedside
A million voices goin' feel like a genocide
If my people don't fight for their equal right
You see I won't get the Peace Prize
'Cause I got a rifle hangin' by my bedside
A million voices goin' feel like a genocide
If my people don't fight for their equal right
Death threats
Me ain't scared
In the middle of the night
(What they said?)
Cowards on the telephone
Say I've got a pretty daughter with a pretty wife
So I got no choice
Got on my chopper, got my vest on
(Choppered up, vest on)
Got on my chopper, got my vest on
(Choppered up, vest on)
Got on my chopper, got my vest on
Yeah, David shoot Goliath with a slingshot

Wyclef Jean's song "Death Threats" is a powerful commentary on the dangers of being a public figure and a voice for change. The lyrics paint a vivid picture of receiving ominous phone calls in the middle of the night, with anonymous voices threatening his family and loved ones. Wyclef responds to these threats by arming himself and riding towards his enemies, determined to protect his family and stand up for what he believes in.
The lyrics also touch on themes of betrayal and mistrust, as Wyclef reflects on the fact that his own countrymen want to kill him. He mentions the rapper Biggie Smalls, whose famous song "What's Beef?" asked a similar question. But for Wyclef, the beef is personal and deadly. He also references his failed bid to become Commander-in-Chief of his home country, and the rumors that were spread about him in order to discredit him.
Throughout the song, Wyclef's message is clear: he will not be silenced by fear or intimidation. He refuses to back down from his fight for justice and equality, even in the face of death threats and violence. The result is a powerful and inspiring anthem for anyone who has ever felt threatened or scared because of their beliefs or activism.
