Jean moved to Brooklyn, New York when he was nine, then to Northern New Jersey, where he began playing the guitar and studying jazz in his high school. In 1987, Jean, his friend (so close they told people they were cousins growing up) Prakazrel Michel (Pras) and his classmate, Lauryn Hill, formed a group called the Tranzlator Crew before becoming The Fugees. Wyclef worked as a cabdriver.
Recently he has been finding success as a collaborator - with his turn on Shakira's 2006 track 'Hips Don't Lie' hitting number one in many countries around the world.
In August of 2010, Jean announced his intent to seek the presidency of Haiti. This move came after his increasingly-high profile humanitarian work in the wake of the earthquake that devastated that nation.

Looka looka looka here looka shorty got back
Should I ask her for a dance? hold on there's too many in the wolf pack
And besides, dirty cash talking to her
Buying her fake furs and taking her to the fever
Quiet as it's kept, that ain't even his benz
She spends his franklins at the malls with her friends
Material girl, living in a material worldBut it's all right cause it's Saturday night
So mister funkmaster, pump the bee gees
And all you college students, play your ouijas
Check the spelling: r-e-f-u-g-e-e, get the cd from sam goody, hee hee!
You ain't even close with the rhymes that you wrote
Don't be mad cause you broke
Let me clear my throat ah huh ah huh
John forte, grab the mic, let's sway this way
I'm more than just a rhymer, you still a small timer
Hoping that the game treat that ass a little kinder
Every step tango'd
Your beef don't concern me
I'm eating mangoes in trinidad with attorneys
My crew's slang flow worldwide like a current
With the every spot where nobody got insurance
Brother, do the math you ain't half near exotic
My man's claim true you forget about it
Po-po just a nuisance, like my influence
Well, recognize you a lie trying do it
Got juice told your lady oops
We nuts baby
Smooth and charismatic, automatic
You gonna save me
God bless the day that my sons survive
We strive to teach the youth, baby, and stay alive
Well, you can tell by the way I roll, shorty, that I'm a ladies man
A business man
Condos down the shore
Multi-million pension plan
But it ain't in my plan to make moves without the fam
I keep it intact
Yo clef, do the track
John, play the mack while I pay the tax
Business as usual
Watching suspects steal my assets
Get cut with gillettes
We built this concept, connect like nynex
Drinks at the bar, my american express
Yo I cook up cook up
The copper pull up pull up
Then I cuff up cuff up
You who's calling bluff
Now you shook up shook up
Cause you lock up lock up
When I love up love up
You who's calling bluff
Hey yo, john is chilling
Dirty cash dealing
What more can I say, we living
That's what we got, we got it good
And since you understood
We be
The lyrics of the song 'We Trying To Stay Alive' by Wyclef Jean are reflective of the '90s urban culture and the challenges of the time. The song is about materialism, money, power, and the struggle to survive in a world where it is difficult to keep one's head above water. The first part of the song talks about a woman with an attractive body, and the confusion of the main character, whether or not to ask her to dance because she is surrounded by a group of people. The woman is being wooed by a rich man with fake fur and money he doesn't own. The main character calls the woman a 'Material girl, living in a material world,' possibly a reference to the famous Madonna song.
However, the main character still feels it's alright to let go and enjoy life because it's Saturday night. It's time to pump up the music and have a good time. In the second half of the song, when John Forte takes over, the focus shifts from material wealth to the struggle of staying alive. He refers to himself as more than just a rhymer while dismissing others who are hoping for a break in the music industry. He mentions that he is eating mangoes in Trinidad and enjoying life but recognizes the struggle that the youth face.
The song is a tribute to the Bee Gees' "Stayin’ Alive," a classic song that represented disco culture, blended with the message of the literal meaning in the context of survival in the streets. It is a cover of the song that also features actor John Travolta from the Saturday Night Fever movie, and the line, "Staying alive, staying alive" from the chorus is repeated throughout the song. Additionally, the song was part of the movie 'Don't Be A Menace To South Central While Drinking Your Juice In The Hood,' and a music video was also produced.
