ROXANNE
Wyclef Jean ft. Sting Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Roxanne, you don't have to put on the red light
Those days are over
You don't have to sell your body to the night
Roxanne, you don't have to wear that dress tonight
Walk the streets for money
You don't care if it's wrong or if it's right

Roxanne, you don't have to put on the red light
Roxanne, you don't have to put on the red light
Put on the red light, put on the red light
Put on the red light, put on the red light
Put on the red light, oh

I loved you since I knew ya
I wouldn't talk down to ya
I have to tell you just how I feel
I won't share you with another boy
I know my mind is made up
So put away your make up
Told you once I won't tell you again it's a bad way

Roxanne, you don't have to put on the red light
Roxanne, you don't have to put on the red light

You don't have to put on the red light
Put on the red light, put on the red light

Overall Meaning

In Wyclef Jean ft. Sting's song Roxanne, the lyrics speak to the titular character urging her to leave her life of prostitution behind. The first verse begs her to stop selling her body for money because those days are over. The second verse asks her to not wear her dress and engage in prostitution for profit, regardless of whether it is right or wrong. Wyclef Jean explains his love for her and how he won’t let another man come in the way of that love or share a love he feels so deeply. The chorus then repeats the lyrics from the first verse, encouraging Roxanne to leave her life of prostitution and move towards something better.

On a deeper level, the song appears to be a commentary on the exploitation of women and their bodies. The lyrics suggest that Roxanne is engaging in prostitution because she doesn't have any other options. Wyclef Jean is pushing her to see that the world has changed, and she can have a better life instead of having to rely on prostitution to make ends meet. The song seeks to give a voice to those who might feel trapped in desperate situations, advocating for societal change that can help them.

I don't care what folks say, this shit was dope in '97. And Sting gave his blessing for the sample and was in the video as well as the song. Puffy & Stevie really did some nice songs back then. Puffy knew what he was doing and truly inspired new fans of the sampled songs to check out the original, so it was win, win all around for those involved. Like I said, this song is dope and is the original Roxanne by Sting/The Police.. 👍🏾
