Wyland is a question, a narrative, a journey.
This journey began in early 2013, when lead singer Ryan Sloan and pianist Pablo Techera, who had been in and out of several bands during their highschool years, decided to collaborate on something new. It wasn’t long before they realised that what they had just begun was going to become part of a much larger story. Helped by Craigslist, coincidences, and something which felt a little bit like fate, the pair set out to complete the fragments of an idea, and found along the way guitarist Mauricio Salazar, bassist Kara Delonas, and drummer Matt Pana. Despite the different members’ diverse backgrounds, they were united by a common dream: do what you love, share what you love, never let your feet touch the ground. It was this ethos which inspired both the band’s name, and its music. Wyland, a small-town band with a big-town dream, had just been born.
It’s the careful collision of influences which make Wyland’s sound what it is: a subtle blend of warm, atmospheric depth, arranged within an upbeat pop format. It’s music which both acknowledges, and builds on the past; mixing the heartfelt lyrics and stand-out vocals of the people that kickstarted their musical journey- the earlier U2 albums and The Police, with ambiental and acoustic beats inspired by artists such as M85 and Jon Hopkins. The result is an optimistic, reflective music, whose soaring vocals both address the present, and look to the future. It’s what the band themselves refer to as "transition music:" a sound which traces their own growth, and encourages others to do the same. A sound designed to inspire other young professionals to keep their head up against the swirling eddies of life.
True to its name, Wyland has no intention of touching down just yet. It’s been under two years since the band’s formation, but it has already gone from strength to strength. Not only have they been busy playing at a diverse range of events, performing to over 4,000 people at New York’s Holi Hai Festival, winning the 2014 Break Contest to take up main stage at Skate and Surf Festival 2014, but they also have had the opportunity to perform alongside acts such as Young the Giant, Capital Cities, Awolnation, and Twenty One Pilots at this year’s Center of the Universe festival.
The quintet is on the verge of releasing their second EP entitled ‘You’re In The World, Get Off Your Feet’. No one can tell what the future will hold, but Wyland are determined to keep going up.

Wyland Lyrics

It's what tears us all apart
You make a dollar off the world
Well you made two off my heart
Lies
Truths that were never told
But when you play with fire
Pull me
Think I'm putty in your hands
Push me
Off where I stand
Resisting
As your colors unfold
Cause baby
You're getting old
Pull me
Think I'm putty in your hands
Push me
Off where I stand
Resisting
As your colors unfold
Cause baby
You're getting old
Why don't you run, run far away
Take me back to yesterday
Trying to pick up what's already been lost
But the pieces are scattered and it's all your fault
Run, run far away
Take me back to yesterday
Trying to take back all the words that you say
But you pushed me and broke me and now you must pay
And now you must pay
And now you must pay
Tell me you love me and act like you don't (You don't)
Mess with my head when you call on the phone (Call on the phone)
Say it gets better but you know it won't (You know it won't)
Breaking my heart, but you can't kill my soul (Can't kill my soul)
Tell me you love me and act like you don't (You don't)
Mess with my head when you call on the phone (Call on the phone)
Say it gets better but you know it won't (You know it won't)
Breaking my heart, but you can't kill my soul (Can't kill my soul)
Pull me
Think I'm putty in your hands (Putty in your hands)
Push me
Off where I stand (Off where I stand)
Resisting
As your colors unfold
Cause baby
You're getting old
Pull me
Think I'm putty in your hands (Putty in your hands)
Push me
Off where I stand (Off where I stand)
Resisting
As your colors unfold
Cause baby
You're getting old
Why don't you run, run far away
Take me back to yesterday (Yesterday)
Trying to pick up what's already been lost
But the pieces are scattered and it's all your fault (It's all your fault)
Run, run far away
Take me back to yesterday (Yesterday)
Trying to take back all the words that you say
But you pushed me and broke me and now you must pay
And now you must pay
And now you must pay
In these lyrics, Wyland explores themes of greed, deception, and the repercussions of toxic relationships. The first stanza delves into the destructive nature of greed, suggesting that it is a force that tears people apart. The line "You make a dollar off the world, well you made two off my heart" implies that the person being referred to is profiting from exploiting both the world and the singer's emotions. This line can be interpreted as a critique of those who prioritize personal gain over genuine connections.
The second stanza focuses on lies and the consequences that follow. The line "But when you play with fire, oh you're gonna get burned" alludes to the idea that deceit will eventually catch up with the deceiver. It suggests that manipulating others and being dishonest will ultimately lead to negative outcomes. The use of fire as a metaphor signifies the destructive nature of lies and the inevitable consequences they bring.
The repetition of the lines "Pull me, think I'm putty in your hands, push me, off where I stand" highlights the power dynamics at play in the relationship. The individual being referred to feels manipulated and controlled, but continues to resist as the "colors" of the other person's true nature are revealed. The line "Cause baby, you're getting old" can be interpreted as an assertion that the manipulative tactics employed by this person are becoming transparent and losing their effectiveness.
The chorus and subsequent verses continue to explore the repercussions of this toxic relationship. The phrase "Run, run far away, take me back to yesterday" expresses a desire to escape from the pain and return to a time when things were better. However, the singer realizes that this is not possible, as the damage caused by the other person's actions cannot be undone. The repetition of the phrase "And now you must pay" reinforces the idea that there will be consequences for the harm inflicted.
The final chorus further emphasizes the conflicting emotions involved in the relationship. The lines "Tell me you love me and act like you don't" and "Mess with my head when you call on the phone" suggest a pattern of emotional manipulation and mind games. The juxtaposition of contradictory actions and words highlights the confusion and hurt experienced by the singer. The line "Breaking my heart, but you can't kill my soul" asserts resilience and strength, implying that despite the pain, the singer will not be completely destroyed by this toxic relationship.
Overall, these lyrics depict a tumultuous relationship marred by greed, lies, and manipulation. The song captures the feelings of betrayal, resistance, and the desire for freedom and escape from a toxic dynamic. It serves as a cautionary tale about the consequences of deceit and selfishness in relationships.
