And ransom captive Israel
That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appear
Shall come to thee, O Israel
O come, O come, Emmanuel
And ransom captive Israel
That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appear
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel
(instrumental)
O come, Thou Key of David, come
And open wide our heavenly home
Make safe the way that leads on high
And close the path to misery
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel
Shall come to thee, O Israel
The song "O Come, O Come Emmanuel" is a traditional hymn that has its origins in the Latin Christian church. It is a poignant song that symbolizes the longing and expectation of Israel for the coming of their savior, and the ultimate redemption of the world. The title of the hymn refers to the Hebrew name "Immanuel," which means "God is with us."
The first verse of the hymn talks about the captivity and exile of Israel, and their longing to be redeemed by the Son of God. It depicts the pain and anguish of waiting, longing for a savior to come and free them from their captivity. The chorus of the song encourages Israel to rejoice, because the long-awaited savior will come to them.
In the second verse, the hymn calls upon Jesus to come as the "Key of David," and to open the gates of heaven for believers. It asks Jesus to make the path to heaven safe and to block the path to misery. The final chorus encourages Israel to rejoice once again, because the long-awaited savior will come to them.
Overall, the hymn is a beautiful expression of the longing and expectation of Israel for the coming of the Messiah, and a reminder of our hope and faith in Jesus Christ as the savior of the world.
