This Is Pop
XTC Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In a milk bar and feeling lost
Drinking sodas as cold as frost
Someone leans in my direction
Quizzing on my jukebox selection
What do you call that noise
That you put on?

This is pop
Yeah yeah
This is pop
Yeah yeah
This is pop
Yeah yeah
This is!

On a walkway and moving fast
All I get is transistor blast
Someone leans in my direction
Quizzing on my station selection
What do you call that noise
That you put on?

This is pop
Yeah yeah
This is pop
Yeah yeah
This is pop
Yeah yeah
This is!

We come the wrong way
We come the long way
We play the songs much too loud

This is
Yeah yeah
This is pop
Yeah yeah
This is pop
Yeah yeah
This is pop
Yeah yeah
This is pop
Yeah yeah
This is pop
Yeah yeah
This is pop
Yeah yeah
This is pop
Yeah yeah
This is pop
Yeah yeah

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of XTC's song "This Is Pop" express the singer's exasperation with people who don't understand or appreciate the music he loves. The first two stanzas describe two different scenarios in which the singer is enjoying pop music (in a milk bar and on a walkway), but someone interrupts him to ask him what he's listening to and derisively calls it "that noise." The chorus responds defiantly, insisting that this is indeed pop music, and repeating the phrase "This is pop" in a shout of affirmation.

The final stanza adds some context to the song's message. The repeated phrase "We come the wrong way / We come the long way" suggests that the singer and his fellow pop fans have had to fight against mainstream tastes and lack of understanding just to be able to enjoy the music they love. They "play the songs much too loud" as a way of asserting themselves against the cultural forces that would silence or marginalize them. The repetition of "yeah yeah" and "pop" in the final lines becomes a rallying cry, a declaration of identity, a way of saying "we are here, we are pop fans, and we are proud."

Overall, "This Is Pop" is a song about celebrating and affirming one's cultural identity, even in the face of ignorance or hostility. It shows how pop music can be a powerful force for bringing communities together and for asserting one's individuality.

One of the most shamefully underrated bands of all time.

This song is the defining statement of XTC, in my opinion. Every album, even song, after this is an attempt at redefining what “pop” is. Xtc is not punk or new wave or psych or whatever other label. They are pop.

I will be listening to Drums and Wires or English settlement and I forget that they were written in ‘79 and ‘82. By the time D&W had come out they were no longer bound by genre. I think that is why they are the Beatles of their generation.
