Xavier Naidoo Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
In the ashes of a backwash town
Black debris, the burned-out trees
Blows out over the sunken seas
Somewhere far along
Singin' the regular song
Dead machines, frozen dreams
It's a state where I belong
And all the walls are wearin' thin
Shoot out all the traffic lights
On your way to the dead of night
Somewhere far along
Singin' a regular song
Dead machines, frozen dreams
They don't bother me at all
You're better off alone
Troubles find their home
The lyrics of Xavier Naidoo's song [untitled] depict a desolate state of being in which the singer feels as though they don't belong in the world around them. He feels downcast and disenchanted with the society he lives in, which he refers to as a "backwash town." The chorus reinforces the idea that the world contains "dead machines" and "frozen dreams," further emphasizing the apathetic and jaded tone of the song. The singer feels trapped within his own skin, and the walls around him are closing in. The imagery of a "sunken sea" and "burned-out trees" adds to the dystopian atmosphere created by the song, while the line "you're better off alone" seems to suggest that the only way to survive in such a world is to keep other people at a distance.
Overall, the lyrics to this song are quite dark, portraying a nihilistic view of the world. The use of repetitive phrases and the simple guitar riff underscore a sense of monotony and hopelessness. While the song certainly paints a bleak picture, it also taps into a certain universality of feeling -- that sense of isolation and disaffection that can come with living in an imperfect world.
