The Scott sisters' father, Rev. Randolf Scott, was part of the 1970s R&B group Scott Three. The sisters sang at church throughout their childhoods while being trained by their father. In 1990, they met the other two members, Burruss and Cottle, in College Park, Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta.

Music career
They first sang at Jermaine Dupri's birthday party in 1991 and later signed to his label, So So Def Recordings. They released their debut album, Hummin' Comin' At 'Cha, in October of 1993. The album featured their debut single, "Just Kickin' It", which reached #2 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, along with the other singles "Tonight", "Understanding", and "Love On My Mind".
Xscape's sophomore album, Off the Hook, was released in July of 1995. It featured the #1 hit "Who Can I Run To" (a cover of the song originally recorded by The Jones Girls) along with singles "Feels So Good", "Can't Hang", and "Do You Want To". During the next few years, they collaborated with different artists such as female rapper MC Lyte on the song "Keep On Keepin' On" and pop/R&B singer Mariah Carey on the Mr. Dupri Mix of her #1 song, "Always Be My Baby", which also featured rapper Da Brat.
They released their third album, Traces of My Lipstick, in May of 1998. It featured the singles "The Arms Of The One Who Loves You", "My Little Secret", "Am I Dreamin'", and "Softest Place on Earth". After the release of this album, the group parted ways.
Then after a five year hiatus Xscape returned to the radio airwaves. With three platinum albums and a slew of top 40 singles under their belt, the sultry R&B quartet, Xscape, is ready to release yet another spicy, seductive album, currently entitled Unchained. Sisters LaTocha and Tamika Scott have reunited with Tameka “Tiny” Cottle, and have added a new member, Keisha Miles, to round out their signature sound.
Xscape has been busy booking live performances across the nation following the growing success of “What’s Up”, the first single off the new album. The group recently opened for Alicia Keys in Houston and just performed on 100.3 The Beat’s 15th Anniversary Birthday Bash at the Universal Amphitheater.

Am I Dreaming
Xscape Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Are you for real?
Verse One:
(Ol' Skool):
Things are kind of hazy,
And my head's all cloudy inside.
Now I've heard talk of angels, baby,
(Tiny):
See you are just too good to be true,
And I hope, there's not some kind of mirage,
With you, oh baby.
Chorus:
Am I dreamin',
Am I just imagining you're here in my life?
Am I dreamin',
Pinch me to see if it's real,
Cause my mind can't decide.
Verse Two:
(Ol' Skool): Will this last for one night,
(Kandi): Or do I have you for a lifetime?
(Ol' Skool): Please say that it's forever,
And that it's not an illusion to my eye.
(LaTocha):
And I hope that you just don't up and disappear,
My love, I pray,
That it's not a hoax, and it's for real, oh.
Repeat Chorus
Bridge:
(Ol' Skool): Baby I know,
Sometime, say that sometime,
I need you to show me girl.
Show me that you're not a mirage,
(LaTocha): Oh baby, I need you, I need you, I need you.
Oh, I need you to pinch me, baby.
(Ol' Skool): I need you to pinch me baby,
Am I dreamin baby?
Repeat Chorus
Break:
(Ol' Skool): My mind can't decide, no no,
(LaTocha): Oh, baby,
Touch me baby, feel me baby.
(Ol' Skool): I want to know if you'll be right there,
(LaTocha): Oh oh oh...
(Ol' Skool): I want to know if you'll be right there,
Tell me this is not an illusion.
(LaTocha): Touch me baby, I want you to feel me baby,
(Ol' Skool): Somebody let me know,
I want to know if you'll be right there,
If it's real,
This is not a mirage, no.
The lyrics to Xscape's song "Am I Dreamin'" delve into the uncertainty and disbelief that often accompanies finding true love. The first verse sung by Ol' Skool describes a foggy and unclear feeling within himself, where he can't believe that he has found an angel that he can call his own. Tiny sings in agreement, explaining that her love interest is almost too good to be true and wonders if he is just a mirage. The chorus repeats the title "Am I dreamin'" to highlight this disbelief and ambiguity towards one's newfound love.
The second verse sung by Ol' Skool and Kandi expresses a desire for their love to last, hoping that it isn't just a one-night stand, and wondering if the love will be forever. LaTocha adds in her verse that she hopes their love is not a hoax and it's indeed for real. The bridge is then sung by Ol' Skool and LaTocha, where they both express their need for validation from their love interest, wanting to be shown that they aren't just imagining things and that their love interest isn't a mirage. The chorus is repeated again, emphasizing this need for clarity and proof to confirm their love.
Interestingly enough, "Am I Dreamin'" was a #1 hit on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop charts and reached #8 on the Top 40 charts. The song was a collaboration between Xscape, who provided the vocals, and Keith Sweat, who co-wrote and produced the song. Sweat was also one of the top R&B artists in the 90s, helping to propel Xscape to success.
