The Scott sisters' father, Rev. Randolf Scott, was part of the 1970s R&B group Scott Three. The sisters sang at church throughout their childhoods while being trained by their father. In 1990, they met the other two members, Burruss and Cottle, in College Park, Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta.

Music career
They first sang at Jermaine Dupri's birthday party in 1991 and later signed to his label, So So Def Recordings. They released their debut album, Hummin' Comin' At 'Cha, in October of 1993. The album featured their debut single, "Just Kickin' It", which reached #2 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, along with the other singles "Tonight", "Understanding", and "Love On My Mind".
Xscape's sophomore album, Off the Hook, was released in July of 1995. It featured the #1 hit "Who Can I Run To" (a cover of the song originally recorded by The Jones Girls) along with singles "Feels So Good", "Can't Hang", and "Do You Want To". During the next few years, they collaborated with different artists such as female rapper MC Lyte on the song "Keep On Keepin' On" and pop/R&B singer Mariah Carey on the Mr. Dupri Mix of her #1 song, "Always Be My Baby", which also featured rapper Da Brat.
They released their third album, Traces of My Lipstick, in May of 1998. It featured the singles "The Arms Of The One Who Loves You", "My Little Secret", "Am I Dreamin'", and "Softest Place on Earth". After the release of this album, the group parted ways.
Then after a five year hiatus Xscape returned to the radio airwaves. With three platinum albums and a slew of top 40 singles under their belt, the sultry R&B quartet, Xscape, is ready to release yet another spicy, seductive album, currently entitled Unchained. Sisters LaTocha and Tamika Scott have reunited with Tameka “Tiny” Cottle, and have added a new member, Keisha Miles, to round out their signature sound.
Xscape has been busy booking live performances across the nation following the growing success of “What’s Up”, the first single off the new album. The group recently opened for Alicia Keys in Houston and just performed on 100.3 The Beat’s 15th Anniversary Birthday Bash at the Universal Amphitheater.

Understanding
Xscape Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
How can we communicate
If you don't here what I say
What I need from you is understanding
So simple as 1,2,3
Understanding is what I need
You don't even know me
That's not the way it should be no
You should listen to me, boy
I tried so very hard to make you understand
But the chooses you make
Baby they're all demands oh
I tried so very hard
To keep our love alive
But you don't wanna meet me half way
Then the understanding dies
There's no way that we can work it out
If we don't pull together
I don't mean to be demanding
I want some understanding
I wanna be with you
What I need from you is understanding
How can we communicate
If you don't here what I say
What I need from you is understanding
So simple as 1,2,3
Understanding is what I need
I listen to you baby
And I know the things your going through
I try to understand,
That's why i'm still with you baby
See everyday we're living
There's one thing that'll always be unsure
That's why I need you baby, pleading baby
Please let our love endure
I tried so very hard
To keep our love alive
But you don't wanna meet me half way
Then the understanding dies
There's no way that we can work it out
If we don't pull together
I don't mean to be demanding
I want some understanding
I wanna be with you
What I need from you is understanding
How can we communicate
If you don't here what I say
What I need from you is understanding
So simple as 1,2,3
Understanding is what I need
All I need , All I need
All need is understanding
How ow ow ow
If you don't here what I say
Can't you see baby
I tried so very hard
To keep our love alive
But you don't wanna meet me half way

If we don't pull together
I don't mean to be demanding

Understanding is what I need
The lyrics to "Understanding" by Xscape highlight the importance of communication and understanding in a relationship. The song begins by emphasizing how crucial it is for partners to understand each other and communicate effectively for a relationship to work. The chorus repeats the same lines about the singer's need for understanding like it's as simple as 1, 2, 3, and without it, communication breaks down. The verses highlight the disconnect between the singer and her partner as she feels unheard and disregarded.
The lyrics reflect the frustration felt when one partner listens while the other disregards their wishes, and there's no way the relationship can survive unless there's an effort to work together. The song's emotional charge speaks to the listener, conveying the message that communication and compromise are necessary for a relationship to thrive. The pleading tone of the song demonstrates how invested the singer is in the relationship, and without understanding, everything she's worked hard to keep alive will fall away.

@@nikkiegaza3446 they were a well oiled machine the way they flowed in that song and in the Who Can I Run To track on their Tracess of their Lipstick 3rd album. They really all Flowed. TAMIKA SCOTT really be holding the mid vocals together eventhough she could easily be the Lead vocalist if it wasn't for Kandi and their management
