Today
YAEL NAIM & David Donatien Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

today i'm looking at the world
and i see ugliness and beauty
neighbours
an angel lives inside a liar
and he doesn't even know
that he has all this inside him

it's been seven years since i've been looking for
and i was crying for more

today i'm taking back my words
’cause i've been judging everybody
so easily
instead, i show you who i am
a liar, an angel, a generous egoist genius
coward

it's been seven years since i've been looking for
and i was crying for more

today i'm looking at our world
and i think choices are everywhere
every second
we choose to love, choose to hate
choose to lose or win
to take a risk or to give up

’cause it's been seven years since i've been looking for
and i was crying for more
it's been seven years since i've been looking for
and i was dying for more

today i'm celebrating our insanity
’cause we are loving unreasonably
we lost our hold
no promises
no signs of where to go
just a pure moment of joy

and it's been seven years since i've been looking for
and i was crying for more

it's been seven years since i've been looking for
i was crying for more

Overall Meaning

In Yael Naim's "Today," the lyrics capture the human experience of searching for meaning and purpose, feeling lost and uncertain at times, and trying to make sense of the beauty and ugliness in the world. The song begins with the reflection of looking at the world and seeing both good and bad things, highlighting the complexity of life as individuals try to navigate through it. The next line introduces the idea of individuals having different personas - "an angel lives inside a liar" - and not even realizing their own potential and goodness.

The chorus of the song emphasizes the search for something more significant and the feeling of crying or dying for that deeper connection or understanding. However, in the second verse, the tone shifts as Naim admits to a habit of judging others easily rather than showing her true self. She then goes on to identify herself as a liar, an angel, a generous egoist genius, and a coward, highlighting the complexity of individual identity and the potential for contradictions within one person.

The final verse celebrates the irrational nature of love and the beauty in embracing insanity as individuals try to find joy and meaning in life. The overall message of "Today" is that life can be challenging, but we have the power to choose how we react to it, and finding joy and love in the midst of chaos is what makes it all worthwhile.

I'm a new soul
I came to this strange world
Hoping I could learn a bit bout how to give and take
But since I came here
Felt the joy and the love , fear
Finding myself making every possible mistake

La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la...

I'm a young soul in this very strange world
Hoping I could learn a bit bout what is true and fake
But why all this hate?
Try to communicate
Finding trust and love is not always easy to make

La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la...

This is a happy end
Cause' you don't understand
Everything you have done
Why's everything so wrong

This is a happy end
Come and give me your hand
I'll take you far away

I'm a new soul
I came to this strange world
Hoping I could learn a bit bout how to give and take
But since I came here
Felt the joy and the fear
Finding myself making every possible mistake

La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la...

La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la....

It was 2008, I remember renovating the house with my Dad. I was just 11 at that time but I made a lot of core memories when this song played in the radio. Now I'm 26 and and my Dad passed away just this year. This song makes me feel like I'm 11 and complete all over again.
