Marrow
YOB Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

All these things
That have come to pass
Emptied well
Of times that never last
Rhythms speak
Sun to winter's call
Pouring forth they
Beckon to enthrall
Burnt clean eyes
Reach into our graves
Into the scars
Of our truth
Of life within
The stars

All these words
Are dust within my mind
In these times
That burn within our sight
Yearning to know
Deep into the marrow

Fall
And see
When there's no ground
To feel
To endure
Rise in the heart
Time will crawl
To the sea
Time will fall
Inside the dream

Weathered stone
Rivers running deep
Flying wings
In skies that never sleep
Earthly blood
Speaking in the stone
Bounding calls
That want us to believe
Cleansing flames
Burn into the night
Into the scars
Of our truth
Of life with
The stars

Restless souls
Flickering light
Painted in gold
Tearing at the seams
Needing to feel
One true moment

Needing to feel
Something true

Overall Meaning

The song "Marrow" by YOB is a deep exploration of existential themes such as the impermanence of life and the search for meaning. The lyrics describe a world that is constantly in flux, where time is fleeting and everything is subject to change. The solemn opening lines, "All these things that have come to pass, Emptied well of times that never last," set the tone for the rest of the song, which is a meditation on the transience of life.

The following lines "Yearning to know, Deep into the marrow" express a desire to know the true nature of reality, to penetrate beneath the surface of things and discover the essence of life. The song then takes a radical turn and urges the listener to "Fall and see when there's no ground to feel, To endure, Rise in the heart." Here, the song seems to suggest that meaning can be found in letting go of preconceptions and allowing oneself to be swept away by the currents of life.

This is one of many doom metal songs Ive gotten many non-metal fans into metal with.
Others include:
“Our Raw Heart” - YOB (obvi)
All of Heartless by Pallbearer
“Misery Hymns” - Churchburn
“Love You To Death” - Type O Negative
“Mirror Reaper” Bell Witch
“Boden” - Amenra (more post-rock, but doomy enough to count)

I found Yob and this specific album at an incredibly hard time in my life. I'd ruined myself with too much work combined with too much alcohol and pretty much ruined all my relationships around me. My brother and I nicknamed eachother Bone and Marrow (only in Norwegian, Bein and Marg). I got it tattooed on my fingers, he got it on the side of his palms. We were sitting in my apartment, me being ruined physically and mentally, he with his problems conserning drugs and depression. He had recently introduced me to Sleep, and while shuffling songs this came on. I laughed first at the title being the very name he'd given me, but we listened in silence as we used to. And I had a revelation, I clearly saw myself from outside of my own body, I saw the damage, the hate, the anger at the world and everyone who failed me and me being a failure and I was tired. I decided to wipe it away, to release all the tension deep within my marrow. And I cried, for the first time in years, I cried for hours, me and my brother. Bone and Marrow. When he died 4 years later, this kept me going. I remembered that day when I finally opened my eyes, and yet again decided to let it all go. My anger towards him for leaving me behind and choosing a road I could never follow, my hate of the people who didn't help him, me being a failure for not seeing his pain.

Brother, if you're out there somewhere, I hope you're listening to this as well

I love you.

I fucking miss you.
