Goodpain
YOKE LORE Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We know where all the red ferns grow
Two feet against me, but beyond my reach
Six keys, one whole heart for each
One whole wave for me
Grass stains cut my bloody knees
It's goodpain it means I can't be phased

That little death inside my sides won't make it right
He wins every time I find myself inside, alone all night
I'll be howling keeping you between my eyes, there I'll be alright
I'll be howling keeping you between my eyes, there I'll be alright

Rorschach the pieces that I lack
Now I felt stained, cold beneath my waves
Behind my suchered face
Cursed down, throw my certain doubt
Let me let you down

That little death inside my sides won't make it right
He wins every time I find myself inside, alone all night
And I'll be howling keeping you between my eyes, there I'll be alright
I'll be howling keeping you between my eyes, there I'll be alright

That little death inside my sides won't make it right
He wins every time I find myself inside, alone all night

I'll be howling keeping you between my eyes, there I'll be alright
I'll be howling keeping you between my eyes, there I'll be alright

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Yoke Lore's song "Goodpain" are heavily symbolic and abstract, with the meaning open to interpretation. However, a common thread that runs through the song is the idea of pain being a necessary part of growth and healing. The opening lines refer to "red ferns," which many people believe only grow in places where there has been trauma, suggesting that pain can lead to growth and beauty. The lines about "grass stains" and "bloody knees" suggest that the pain might come from physical exertion or experiencing something difficult, but that it's ultimately worth it.

The chorus repeats the line "that little death inside my sides won't make it right," which could refer to the feeling of a broken heart or even the physical pain of anxiety or depression. However, the singer seems to find solace in the idea of keeping someone close to them, as if that connection is what gives them the strength to face their pain. The use of the word "howling" suggests raw emotion and perhaps even a primal need to express oneself.

Later in the song, the lyric "Rorschach the pieces that I lack" could refer to the psychological test in which inkblots are used to determine someone's personality. The singer may be acknowledging that they are missing certain parts of themselves, and that seeing them reflected back in someone else (represented by the inkblots) is comforting. The rest of the song repeats the themes of pain, growth, and connection, with the final lines ending on a note of acceptance and resilience.

I'm surprised this has so little exposure. It's like a hidden gem of a song.

I have sat here, and honestly just taken in this beauty of a song, Iā€™ve listened hundreds of times, and there is just something about it, it draws me in and keeps me here, it makes me sad, yet happy at the same time, it makes me miss everyone in my life, it makes me want to go do something crazy, be a different person, make full use of my time, hang on to my girlfriend with all my heart, it makes me see things differently... I am trapped by this song, it is truly a work of art, I applaud you.
