Midnight In Tokyo
Y & T Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

From afar I have come
’Cause you called to me
A guitar was the sound that you heard
Like a song on a wave
From across the sea
Like a vaguely familiar word
The ring of fire won’t discourage me
Though the earth moved under my feet
The day that we touched
And now, I’m here with you
But now, I’m wanting to
Get back to my home and the ones
I miss so much

Midnight, midnight in Tokyo
Where the neon lights the land of the rising sun
Midnight, oh midnight I must go
But one day I’ll return if you’ll only wait for me

In each place I can feel the warmth of you
In your face I can see that you’re strong
And respect is what I’ve learned from you
When I’m gone, it won’t be for long
I ride the bullet through the heart of you
Though the winds will blow
And the rain will fall when I’m gone
But now, I’m here with you
And now, I’m wanting to get back to my home
And the ones who miss me so much

Midnight, midnight in Tokyo
Where the neon lights the land of the rising sun

Midnight, oh midnight I must go
But one day I’ll return if you’ll only wait for me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of the song "Midnight in Tokyo" by Y & T depict a story of a person who has traveled from afar to be with their loved one who had called out to him. It was the sound of the guitar that the person had heard, like a song on a wave from across the sea, pulling him towards his lover. The ring of fire is not enough to discourage him, even when the earth moves beneath his feet as they finally touch. But now, after spending time with his lover, he longs to return home to the ones he misses so much.

The song paints a picture of Tokyo at midnight, where the neon lights of the land of the rising sun shine bright. The warmth of his lover is felt in every place and in her face, he sees that she is strong. The respect he has learned from her will make the absence not be for long, and he will return one day if she waits for him. Riding the bullet through the heart of Tokyo, though the winds will blow and the rain will fall when he's gone, he is determined to return to those he loves.

The lyrics of the song resonate with the feeling of longing and missing loved ones, and the power of love pulling people together from different parts of the world. It conveys the message that the warmth of love can be felt across continents, even when people are not physically together. It highlights the power of respect and the strength of character that are essential in any sustainable relationship.

I saw them in 1983 and was blown away. They deserved a greater recognition in the U.S.

My mum put this on a mixtape for me way back in the day with a bunch of other stuff, when people still made mixtapes! I would always fast forward to this tune as it was my favourite. I had a friend called Matthew who loved it too and we would rewind this over and over and sing along in my room. In the words of Bob Dylan ‘I wish, I wish, I wish in vain, that we could sit simply in that room again. Ten thousand dollars at the drop of a hat, I’d give it all gladly if our lives could be like that.’ I miss that guy. Hope all you lovely youtubers are doing okay. Music connects us, never forget that.

Y&T are an amazing talented band. Unfortunately they didn't get the top bill in the US. They were up against some really tough competition back then. The Iron Maiden rock machine, Def Leppard and.,..,....... They got missed. Let's not forget Bon Jovi. Love Yesterday and Today.
