New soul
Yael Naïm Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm a new soul
I came to this strange world
Hoping I could learn a bit 'bout how to give and take
But since I came here, felt the joy and the fear
Finding myself making every possible mistake

[Repeat: x42]
La, la, la, la

See I'm a young soul in this very strange world
Hoping I could learn a bit 'bout what is true and fake
But why all this hate? try to communicate
Finding trust and love is not always easy to make

[Repeat: x42]
La, la, la, la

This is a happy end
Cause you don't understand
Everything you have done
Why's everything so wrong

This is a happy end
Come and give me your hand
I'll take you far away

I'm a new soul
I came to this strange world
Hoping to learn a bit 'bout how to give and take
But since I came here, felt the joy and the fear
Finding myself making every possible mistake

New soul (la, la, la, la,)
In this very strange world
Every possible mistake
Possible mistake

Every possible mistake
Mistakes, mistakes, mistakes

Overall Meaning

Yael Naïm's "New Soul" is a song about being an innocent and inexperienced newcomer to a strange world. The song's opening verse introduces the singer as a "new soul," venturing into an unknown land hoping to learn more about herself and how to navigate life. The hope is to achieve a better understanding of how to give and take, but the journey is challenging. She feels joy mixed with fear and makes every possible mistake as she tries to find her way. The chorus, with its repeated "la, la, la's," adds an almost childlike innocence to the song, underscoring the lyrics' theme of naivete about the world.

The second verse expands on the first's themes as the singer, still characterized as a "young soul," grapples with finding truth in a world full of fake appearances. The lyrics lament the prevalence of hate and lack of communication, with the singer reflecting on the difficulties of finding trust and love. However, despite its somewhat melancholic lyrics, the song ends on a hopeful note. The singer declares that things have worked out, inviting the listener to join her on a journey where she will take them far away.

In conclusion, Yael Naïm's "New Soul" is a beautiful song about the challenges of being a newcomer to this world, making every possible mistake in the pursuit of understanding life's intricacies. The song is filled with a mix of hope, fear, joy, and melancholy, underscoring the complexity of human emotions.

It was 2008, I remember renovating the house with my Dad. I was just 11 at that time but I made a lot of core memories when this song played in the radio. Now I'm 26 and and my Dad passed away just this year. This song makes me feel like I'm 11 and complete all over again.
