Born and raised in Washington, DC, YahZarah started singing at the age of 7 in her church choir. Her love for performance began after winning a youth talent search at the Kennedy Center at age 10. After years of honing her talent in churches, talent shows and local concerts, she entered high school at DC’s prestigious Duke Ellington School of the Arts. Upon graduation in 1997, she was accepted to North Carolina Central University in Durham on a full scholarship to the school’s jazz program.
In 1998, she left NC Central and began touring as a background singer for Erykah Badu. While touring, YahZarah contributed background vocals and vocal arrangements to Badu’s platinum-selling “Mama’s Gun” LP, and was featured in the video for the album’s lead single, ‘Bag Lady.’ In 2001, she left the Mama’s Gun tour and released her debut album “Hear Me” on the KEO Music label. A follow up LP, 2003’s “Blackstar,” was issued on the Three Keys label and reached #44 on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums chart.
2004 found YahZarah reuniting with longtime collaborator and fellow NC Central classmate Phonte Coleman (Little Brother, The Foreign Exchange) for a series of crucial guest appearances. With the release of The Foreign Exchange’s debut album “Connected,” YahZarah was featured on the lead single “Sincere.” The following year she appeared on Little Brother’s “Minstrel Show” LP (Atlantic Records), and was featured on the debut single “Lovin It.” She later contributed two vocal performances to The Foreign Exchange’s GRAMMY-nominated “Leave It All Behind” LP in 2008. That same year, she released an EP of new material entitled “The Prelude.” To support the EP, she toured nationally and internationally with artists such as Chaka Khan, Musiq Soulchild, The Roots, Rahsaan Patterson, and R. Kelly.
YahZarah’s latest album “The Ballad Of Purple Saint James,” is scheduled for release in May 2010 on the Foreign Exchange Music label.

Love neve fails, it's the things you do
And never really the things you say
I wanna know love, with or without you
Inhale peace, exhale joy
Know love
Are you part of my plan?
I wanna know love
Inhale peace, exhale joy
Know love
Are you part of my plan, man? ah
'Cuz according to faith,
Things are gonna get better, oh, yeah
Are you part of my plan, man?
Are we on the same page?
I lit a candle late last night to think of you
Could you hear me?
(Could you hear me just come out of my head?)
Oh, I tried to bring myself to you
But you never hear me, no, no, no
(Chorus)
I was in love with you, you were chillin'
While I am catchin' the feelings
It's cool (it's cool, see it's cool)
'Cuz I release you, oh
Love is only love when your heart understands
And you mind is reconciled, ahh, ahh, ahhh, ah
(Chorus)
Oh tell me why you rip this world apart
Oh no, yeah
Ahh, I need to know why you try to hurt me
Yeahh, yeahh, yeahh, oh, ohhh, oh
(Chorus)
I don't want to beg you won't move
To change
No, I think I've done enough so far
All I want to do is be down for you,
But you got no clue what you got to do
So I wanna know love for myself, fine
(Chorus x3)
So if you wanna know love
Oh it's me
If you wanna know love, it's me, yeah
'Cuz wherever the green grass grows
Wherever it grows is where I put my feet
Yeahhh, yeahhh, yeah
The lyrics to Yahzarah's song Same Page are a reflection on the complexities of love and relationships. The spoken intro highlights the idea that actions speak louder than words when it comes to love. The singer expresses her desire to understand love, whether with or without her partner, and emphasizes the importance of finding inner peace and joy. The chorus repeats the phrase "I wanna know love" and asks if her partner is a part of her plan. The following lines suggest a hopeful outlook for the future, based on faith, and a desire for mutual understanding and agreement between partners.
The song then moves into a more personal reflection, as the singer lights a candle to think of her partner, but wonders if they can hear her. The lyrics reflect on a past relationship where the singer was in love with someone who was not ready for commitment. She ultimately releases him and acknowledges that love requires both a reconciled heart and mind. The chorus repeats several times, emphasizing the central theme of the song.
Finally, the song ends on a somewhat ambiguous note. The singer no longer wants to beg her partner to change, but instead emphasizes her own desire to understand and experience love on her own terms. The final lines could suggest that the singer is ready to move on from her current relationship and start on a new path. Overall, Same Page is a reflective and honest exploration of love and relationships, highlighting both the struggles and the hope that come with finding true understanding and connection.
