Yazoo were formed in early 1982 by former Depeche Mode songwriter Vince Clarke (synthesizers) and English singer Alison Moyet (vocals) and signed to Mute Records in the United Kingdom.
Their debut single "Only You" was released on 15 March 1982 and rose to number 2 on the UK charts. They also released two studio albums: Upstairs at Eric's in 1982 and You and Me Both in 1983.
Shortly after the release of the second album, Moyet and Clarke decided to break up. Moyet pursued a solo career while Clarke first founded (the short lived) The Assembly followed by the successful Erasure.
Vince Clarke and Alison Moyet briefly reunited in 2008 and toured Europe and the United States as Yazoo for the first time in twenty-five years. Also in 2008, their record company issued a 4-disc box set called In Your Room; containing remastered editions of both of their original albums, a disc of b-sides and remixes (imaginitively titled B-Sides and Remixes) and a DVD containing promotional videos, interviews etc.

Yazoo Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Said to much while he stayed
And left too soon.
Bright on an evening sea,
He washed in with the tide
Deep in each other's dreams
Where all but dreams had died.
Wretched in your thoughts
Gentle hate within the love you bought.
Words fade like flowers shadowed
There beneath your wall
Wind cries from every angle
Dead leaves left to wait for fall.
And in my darkest hour
When I can find no light
My goals are out of sight
And nothing warms the night.
I close my eyes
And with such sweet surprise
I can be anywhere
I can be anyone.
And in my darkest hour
When I can find no light
My goals are out of sight
And nothing warms the night.
I close my eyes
And with such sweet surprise
I can be anywhere
I can be anything
I can be anyone
I can be anyone.
The lyrics of Yazoo's "Anyone" are rather cryptic and open to interpretation. The song is about an intense emotional connection that didn't work out and the pain of the aftermath. The singer is reliving memories of a past relationship that has ended badly. Fate is mentioned, as if it was fate that brought them together, but also caused everything to come crashing down. The line "bright on an evening sea, he washed in with the tide" speaks to the intensity of their connection - it was bright, shining, and impossible to ignore. However, it also now feels like it's gone too soon, and everything that was once bright has now washed away like the tide going out.
The chorus of the song ("And in my darkest hour, when I can find no light...") is where the singer begins to speak about how they cope with the pain of the past relationship. They close their eyes and allow themselves to imagine that they can be anyone and anywhere. They are able to find some solace in the idea that they can simply escape the pain by imagining themselves somewhere else entirely. The song speaks to the universal experience of heartbreak and the ways in which we cope with it.

Hi All, when Alison crescendos to `I Close My Eyes` ...it could make a deaf person hear again and create another earthquake out in the Pacific. What a brilliantly powerful and soulful voice she has. Superb.

True although I always wish there was more development in the song after it, the music begs for it.
