Yazoo were formed in early 1982 by former Depeche Mode songwriter Vince Clarke (synthesizers) and English singer Alison Moyet (vocals) and signed to Mute Records in the United Kingdom.
Their debut single "Only You" was released on 15 March 1982 and rose to number 2 on the UK charts. They also released two studio albums: Upstairs at Eric's in 1982 and You and Me Both in 1983.
Shortly after the release of the second album, Moyet and Clarke decided to break up. Moyet pursued a solo career while Clarke first founded (the short lived) The Assembly followed by the successful Erasure.
Vince Clarke and Alison Moyet briefly reunited in 2008 and toured Europe and the United States as Yazoo for the first time in twenty-five years. Also in 2008, their record company issued a 4-disc box set called In Your Room; containing remastered editions of both of their original albums, a disc of b-sides and remixes (imaginitively titled B-Sides and Remixes) and a DVD containing promotional videos, interviews etc.

In My Room
Yazoo Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I only wait for it to stop
And in the room locked up inside me
The cutout magazines remind me
I sit and wait alone in my room
And in my room against the wall
There is picture very small
A photograph I took some years ago
It shows a picture of the room I know
I sit and wait alone in my room
[Chorus:]
The walls are white and in the night
The room is lit by electric light
I stand and watch the clock
I only wait for it to stop
The doors are shut and all the windows lock
The only sound is from the clock
I sit and wait alone in my room
[Chorus]
Yazoo's song "In My Room" paints a picture of isolation and loneliness, through the lyrics and haunting melody. The song's lyrics describe the singer's state of being, as they anxiously wait for time to pass in a room that's locked up. The only sound heard within the space comes from a ticking clock, and framed cutout magazines serve as haunting reminders of something that isn't quite clear. Perhaps the magazines represent the person's inability to escape their own thoughts or memories, or maybe they represent a disconnect from the outside world. The singer also describes a small photograph they took of the room years ago, which gives the impression that not much has changed during that time.
The chorus repeats the theme of the song, emphasizing the plain walls and electric light that illuminates the singer's solitary confinement. The lyrics convey the feeling of being trapped, both within the physical space and the mind. With no mention of anyone else or any kind of interaction, the song becomes a journey inward, to a place where time is suspended and the only conversation comes from within.
The lyrics of "In My Room" speak to the human need for connection, and the anxiety and depression that can arise when that need goes unfulfilled. With stunning simplicity, Yazoo has created a song that invites the listener to share in this experience, to reflect on their own sense of isolation, and to perhaps find comfort in the idea that they are not alone.
