Yazoo were formed in early 1982 by former Depeche Mode songwriter Vince Clarke (synthesizers) and English singer Alison Moyet (vocals) and signed to Mute Records in the United Kingdom.
Their debut single "Only You" was released on 15 March 1982 and rose to number 2 on the UK charts. They also released two studio albums: Upstairs at Eric's in 1982 and You and Me Both in 1983.
Shortly after the release of the second album, Moyet and Clarke decided to break up. Moyet pursued a solo career while Clarke first founded (the short lived) The Assembly followed by the successful Erasure.
Vince Clarke and Alison Moyet briefly reunited in 2008 and toured Europe and the United States as Yazoo for the first time in twenty-five years. Also in 2008, their record company issued a 4-disc box set called In Your Room; containing remastered editions of both of their original albums, a disc of b-sides and remixes (imaginitively titled B-Sides and Remixes) and a DVD containing promotional videos, interviews etc.

Mr Blue
Yazoo Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Like an old man slowly dying
And the only sound, the wind that fills the trees
Even colder comes the moon
And though it never seems too soon
A sudden stillness as the rainfall starts to freeze
[Chorus:]
I'm Mr. Blue
I'm here to stay with you
And no matter what you do
When you're lonely, I'll be lonely too
[Repeat: x2]
A young girl, she is shaded
Bears the scars that never faded
Of the baby that was born on Christmas day
While the heavens sing their song
A child's life is never long
Cause the food supplies will only last a day
[Chorus]
Patriot emotion, is the cause of the commotion
After all there's really no-one here to blame
Soldiers taking orders, cause we must defend the borders
Of our nation (and the other side's the same)
[Chorus]
I'll come to you at night
When all the world is sleeping tight
And lie beside you, till the early morning dew
You can't hear me, you can't see
But you can feel me when you read
The folded letter she left addressed to you
[Chorus]
The lyrics of Yazoo's song Mr Blue are somewhat enigmatic and speak of melancholic feelings in different stories. The first verse sets a somber tone and opens up to the cascade of a winter landscape with the sound of the wind blowing through the trees, crying like an old man slowly dying. The loneliness and stillness transmitted by this nature setting fit the lyrics of the following verses. In the second verse, the story depicts the tragedy of a young girl who bears the scars of a baby born on Christmas Day, which emphasizes the shortness of life and the vulnerability of those who are already born with a disadvantage. The lyrics end with the reflection on patriotism's emotion and the notion that it causes commotion blaming no one when soldiers take orders to protect a nation. The chorus repeats twice, and the song finishes with the promise of being present, even if invisibly, to the person in need.
