Yazoo were formed in early 1982 by former Depeche Mode songwriter Vince Clarke (synthesizers) and English singer Alison Moyet (vocals) and signed to Mute Records in the United Kingdom.
Their debut single "Only You" was released on 15 March 1982 and rose to number 2 on the UK charts. They also released two studio albums: Upstairs at Eric's in 1982 and You and Me Both in 1983.
Shortly after the release of the second album, Moyet and Clarke decided to break up. Moyet pursued a solo career while Clarke first founded (the short lived) The Assembly followed by the successful Erasure.
Vince Clarke and Alison Moyet briefly reunited in 2008 and toured Europe and the United States as Yazoo for the first time in twenty-five years. Also in 2008, their record company issued a 4-disc box set called In Your Room; containing remastered editions of both of their original albums, a disc of b-sides and remixes (imaginitively titled B-Sides and Remixes) and a DVD containing promotional videos, interviews etc.

Only You
Yazoo Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Can you hear me
Came back only yesterday
I'm moving further away
Want you near me
All I needed was the love you gave
All I needed for another day
Only you
Sometimes when I think of her name
When it's only a game
And I need you
Listen to the words that you say
It's getting harder to stay
When I see you
All I needed was the love you gave
All I needed for another day
And all I ever knew
Only you
All I needed was the love you gave
All I needed for another day
And all I ever knew
Only you
This is going to take a long time
And I wonder what's mine
Can't take no more
Wonder if you'll understand
It's just the touch of your hand
Behind a closed door
All I needed was the love you gave
All I needed for another day
And all I ever knew
Only you
The opening lyrics of Yazoo's hit song Only You paint a vivid picture of someone gazing out of a window, lost in thought. The somber melody captures the feeling of nostalgia and longing as the singer reflects on a past love. They reminisce about the love they once had and acknowledge that they still need that love to get through their days. The chorus emphasizes the importance of their previous relationship and how it was the only thing that mattered.
As the song continues, the poignant lyrics reveal that the singer is struggling without their former partner. They are finding it increasingly difficult to move on and their thoughts often wander back to their lost love. The line "It's just the touch of your hand behind a closed door" highlights the intense desire they still feel for their ex-partner, even though they are no longer together. The song concludes with a sense of confusion and uncertainty, as the singer wonders whether their former partner will truly understand how they are feeling.
Overall, Only You is a beautiful and deeply emotional song about the enduring power of love. The melancholic melody and poignant lyrics perfectly capture the sense of longing and heartache that can come from a lost love.
