Too Pieces
Yazoo Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Write me a letter a face in the hall
Hiding from someone afraid of the fall
And she's waiting for someone to take her back to where she came from
And she'll wait alone for hours she won't mind because there's someone
In the story she remembers she remembers in the letter
And the tears locked up inside her make her heart break open wider
Shuts her eyes and takes the picture from the wall

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Yazoo's "Too Pieces" describe a woman who is seeking refuge from an unknown fear. She is hiding in a hallway, waiting for someone to rescue her and take her back to where she came from. Her memories of this place are vivid and emotional, and she feels trapped and alone without someone to help her. The use of the phrase "Too Pieces" in the title of the song suggests that this woman may feel broken or fragmented, and her heart may be breaking open wider as she struggles to move forward.

The singer of the song is trying to understand this woman's predicament and empathize with her. The use of the phrase "in the story she remembers" implies that there is a particular event or moment in her past that is haunting her, and that the tears she is holding back are a result of this event. The picture on the wall that she takes down is likely a symbol of this memory, and by shutting her eyes, she is trying to shut out the pain associated with it.

Overall, "Too Pieces" is a poignant and deeply emotional song that explores themes of fear, loss, and nostalgia. It speaks to the universal human experience of feeling broken and in need of rescue, and the hopeful, yet bittersweet ending suggests that there is always the possibility of healing and finding peace.

I used to listen to it on the school bus every morning when I was 15. I was the first kid picked up and the last one dropped off, so I usually got through Upstairs at Eric's and You & Me Both before I got to school / back home. I still associate the smell of freshly shampooed wet hair with Alison Moyet's voice, because I would be so close to a girl who seemed to step out of the shower and immediately onto the bus.

This is my fav off "eric's" It is underrated. The instrumentation is sublime. The drum machine annihilates your skull and Allison's heartbreaking vocal tears off your face and sews it on upside down. If you don't feel emotionally moved by this - then you are a robot. Play on DESTROY through a good set of headphones.
