Too Pieces
Yazoo Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Write me a letter a face in the hall
Hiding from someone afraid of the fall
And she's waiting for someone to take her back to where she came from
And she'll wait alone for hours she won't mind because there's someone
In the story she remembers she remembers in the letter
And the tears locked up inside her make her heart break open wider
Shuts her eyes and takes the picture from the wall

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Yazoo's "Too Pieces" describe a woman who is seeking refuge from an unknown fear. She is hiding in a hallway, waiting for someone to rescue her and take her back to where she came from. Her memories of this place are vivid and emotional, and she feels trapped and alone without someone to help her. The use of the phrase "Too Pieces" in the title of the song suggests that this woman may feel broken or fragmented, and her heart may be breaking open wider as she struggles to move forward.

The singer of the song is trying to understand this woman's predicament and empathize with her. The use of the phrase "in the story she remembers" implies that there is a particular event or moment in her past that is haunting her, and that the tears she is holding back are a result of this event. The picture on the wall that she takes down is likely a symbol of this memory, and by shutting her eyes, she is trying to shut out the pain associated with it.

Overall, "Too Pieces" is a poignant and deeply emotional song that explores themes of fear, loss, and nostalgia. It speaks to the universal human experience of feeling broken and in need of rescue, and the hopeful, yet bittersweet ending suggests that there is always the possibility of healing and finding peace.

@YouKnowWhereYouWentWrong

Vince tasked with writing a Tamla Motown chord progression, melody and words using electronics, Alison Moyet coming in with The Voice. This is what makes Yazoo so special. When I read old interviews with the two of them and watch newer videos I understand what made them so good. This is classic.

Hi,

Alison has stated that Vinces "Pop Sensibilities" were greater than hers and you can definitely understand and see what she meant, by who wrote certain songs on both the Upstairs at Eric's and You and Me Both albums.

Alison focused and oftentimes obsessed about the intracies of the lyrics on the tracks she wrote where as Vince heard a chorus and a 'hook' in his head and just produced it!

Two great artists in their own right and it's hoped that they will change their minds for a second time and work on another great music project...together...

I'm curious. Is it the early eighties; your youth?

@thestrengthwithin4249

Lilien Calvel And I’m curious why you are curious 🧐

@liliencalvel6151

@@thestrengthwithin4249 Just curious, that's all. It's because this song is from around 83 or so. I think it's a really neat time to have been around. You don't have to answer that of course and I apologize if I offended you.

@thestrengthwithin4249

Lilien Calvel yes I was in my youth around that time, The album came out in 1982 it was called upstairs at Erics, and I have just so many fond memories of listening to this album, by two unbelievable artists, I had the pleasure of seeing Alison Moyet two years ago, she was absolutely amazing, PS you didn’t offend me lol 😂. Stay safe 👍

@thestrengthwithin4249
