The Only Way Is Up
Yazz & The Plastic Population Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
To the lowest turn
Bein' on the bottom line
Sure ain't no fun
But if we should be evicted
Huh, from our homes
We'll just move somewhere else
Oh
(Hold on) hold on
(Hold on) hold on
Ooh, aah, baby
(Hold on) hold on
(Hold on) ooh ooh aah
The only way is up, baby
For you and me now
The only way is up, baby
For you and me now
Aah
Now we may not know, huh
Where our next meal is coming from
But with you by my side
I'll face what is to come
Aah, boy I want to thank you
Yeah, for loving me this way
Things may be a little hard now
But we'll find a brighter day
Oh, yeah
(Hold on) hold on
(Hold on) hold on
Ooh, ooh ooh
(Hold on) hold on
(Hold on) won't be long
Ooh, yeah
The only way is up, baby
For you and me now
The only way is up, baby
For you and me now
Ooh ooh ooh
Talk about the only way is up, baby
Talk about the only way
Talk about the only way is up, baby
Talk about the only way
Talk about the only way is up, baby
(Hold on) hold on
(Hold on) hold on
Hey
(Hold on) hold on
(Hold on) won't be long
No no no
The only way is up, baby
For you and me now
The only way is up, baby
For you and me now
The only way is up, baby
For you and me now
The only way is up, baby
For you and me now
The only way is up
For you and me now
The only way is up, baby
For you and me now
The only way is up
For you and me now
The only way is up
For you and me now
The only way is up
For you and me now
The only way is up
For you and me now
The song "The Only Way Is Up" by Yazz & The Plastic Population is an upbeat and optimistic track that deals with overcoming adversity and rising above tough times. The opening lyrics suggest that the singer and protagonist is at the lowest point of their life, having been "broken down to the lowest turn" and "on the bottom line". But in this moment, they find hope and resilience, deciding that if they should be "evicted from their homes" they will simply "move somewhere else and still carry on". This sentiment is reinforced by the chorus, which declares that "the only way is up" for both the singer and their partner, who they thank for loving them through hard times.
The song's lyrics are generally about persevering through difficult times and staying positive, even when circumstances are challenging. The use of repetition in the chorus, where the phrase "hold on" is repeated multiple times, emphasizes the idea of persistence and determination. The line "now we may not know where our next meal is coming from" speaks to the realities faced by many people living in poverty, and underscores the message of the song - that even in the toughest situations, there is always hope and the possibility of improvement.

We've been broken down
We've faced tough times and hardships
To the lowest turn
We've hit rock bottom
Bein' on the bottom line
Being in a difficult situation
Sure ain't no fun
It's not enjoyable
But if we should be evicted
Even if we lose everything
Huh, from our homes
If we're forced to leave our house
We'll just move somewhere else
We'll find a new place to live
And still carry on
And continue to persevere
The only way is up, baby
The future can only get better for us
For you and me now
Together, we will move forward
Now we may not know, huh
We may not be certain of the future
Where our next meal is coming from
We may not know where our next meal will come from
But with you by my side
With your support and encouragement
I'll face what is to come
I'll be ready for whatever comes our way
Boy I want to thank you
I want to express my gratitude to you
Yeah, for loving me this way
For the love and care you've shown me
Things may be a little hard now
We're going through a tough time
But we'll find a brighter day
But we will get through it and things will improve
Talk about the only way is up, baby
Let's focus on the positive and look ahead
Talk about the only way
Let's talk about how we can make things better
Won't be long
It won't take too much time
The only way is up
Our situation can only improve from here
