Yeah Yeah Yeahs Lyrics

Love my name
Love left dry
Frost or flame
Skeleton me
Fall asleep
Spin the sky
Skeleton me
Wait, don't cry
Love, don't go
Love, don't cry
Skeleton me
Skeleton me

Soon comes rain
Dry your eyes
Frost or flame
Skeleton me
Fall asleep
Spin the sky
Skeleton me
Love, don't cry
Love, don't cry
Love, don't cry
Skeleton me

Skeleton me

Overall Meaning

The song "Skeletons" by Yeah Yeah Yeahs is a hauntingly beautiful tune that touches upon the fragility of love and the human spirit. The lyrics are deeply evocative and speak to the pain of losing someone you love. The first verse begins with "Love my name, love left dry, frost or flame, skeleton me." The singer is in pain, feeling abandoned by love and left to face the elements of life alone. The chorus, "Skeleton me, fall asleep, spin the sky, wait don't cry, love don't go, love don't cry," is a plea to hold onto the love that is slipping away. The second verse continues with the theme of loss and pain, "Soon comes rain, dry your eyes, frost or flame, skeleton me." The repetition of "skeleton me" in the song emphasizes the singer's feeling of emptiness and loneliness. The final chorus repeats the plea to not let go of love and ends with "skeleton me, skeleton me, skeleton."

The imagery of the song is powerfully symbolic - the singer is like a skeleton, stripped bare and exposed to the elements. The harsh imagery of frost and flames emphasizes the pain of loss and the toll it takes on the human soul. The repetition of "love don't go, love don't cry" adds to the haunting quality of the song.

I was dying of an eating disorder at the time when this song came out (2009) & I was obsessed with the YYY’s. My memory is of my parents driving me 4 hours south to go to inpatient treatment & we listened to this album on repeat on the way down. We all cried when this song would play. It was the first time I ever saw my Dad cry. It ultimately gave me strength to overcome anorexia because I didn’t want my family to hurt. Impactful song in my life, forever.
