Turn Into
Yeah Yeah Yeahs Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I know, what I know, I know
On the car ride down
I hear it in my head real low
Turn into
The only thing I ever--
Turn into
Hope I do
Turn into you

I know, what I know, I know
That girl you found
Keeps that kind of window closed
She'll turn into
The only thing you ever--
Turn into
Hope I do
Turn into you

Can't say why I kept this from you
My those quiet eyes become you
Leave it where it can't remind us
Turn this all around behind us
Oh! Well I know!
I'll fall right in to keep you out
I'd like to tell you all about it

I know, what I know, I know
This last time around
I'll hear it in my head real low
Turn into
The only thing you ever know

I know, what I know, I know
Ah yes.

Overall Meaning

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs's song "Turn Into" seems to be about the desire to become someone else or to merge with another person. The lyrics express a longing to transform into the person that the singer is addressing, saying "Turn into the only thing I ever hope I do/Turn into you". This desire to "turn into" the other person is repeated throughout the song and creates a sense of intensity and urgency in the lyrics.

The second verse shifts the focus to the person that the singer is addressing, with the lyrics "That girl you found/Keeps that kind of window closed/She'll turn into/The only thing you ever--/Turn into/Hope I do/Turn into you". Here, the singer seems to be acknowledging that the person they are addressing also has a desire to transform or merge with another person, and they hope that they can be that person.

In the final verse, there is a sense of resignation and acceptance, with the lyrics "This last time around/I'll hear it in my head real low/Turn into/The only thing you ever know". The repetition of "I know, what I know, I know" throughout the song also seems to express a sense of certainty and inevitability about the desire to turn into someone else.

Overall, the song "Turn Into" by Yeah Yeah Yeahs is a powerful expression of the desire for transformation and connection with another person. It creates a sense of urgency and intensity through repetition and a sense of resignation at the end.

I’ve loved everything they’ve ever done, but this one gives me such crazy nostalgia that it makes me cry. It brings me back to being a teenage girl in my bedroom. I used to listen to Show Your Bones on repeat after it came out. Crazy to think it was 13 years ago

@devenlawrence6211

I just told my friends the same thing. Crazy nostalgia. The YYYs make timeless music.

@justinhall914

Yes it makes takes me to a point where my daughter mother and I were deeply in love and I made all kinds of mistakes and ruined it. And this music just makes me want those times back again. All I can do now is be thankful I felt love like that and never take it for granted again
