Of the song, Alexander said:

I’ve had a couple of, let’s say, ‘encounters’ with guys who identify as straight but what has happened between us has been somewhat less than straight, so I wanted to write a song about that particular experience – so that’s what inspired the song’s lyrics.

In an interview with NYLON, Olly also said:

"There’s so much that goes on in an experience like that. On the one hand, the guy is struggling with his sexuality and feeling unable to express himself as anything other than straight while also desiring me.

"I’m on the other side feeling like both a sinner and saint or a devil and angel, leading this guy down a path of ‘sinfulness’ while, at the same time, helping him explore his sexuality.

This song, this music, this video... The first time I watched this I felt... honoured. There's a lot of symbolism and hidden meaning in the art of the video itself. The strength of character it takes to be so revealed and exposed is what makes me feel so honoured. While the dancing was great my favourite parts surrounded the collar and the intimate expressions being exchanged between people. The way he closes his eyes when it goes on, the hands on the shoulders to ground him, the other collared humans standing rigidly and dull faced, the woman who marks him, the glance and trembling breath when it's removed, the eye contact with the council... even the subtle communication he's having with himself while he dances. Upon first glance it would seem like an external language but when I watch it feels like there's an internal liberation going on. A freeing and claiming of the "self" that contrasts with the android society that surrounds him. I really... just really love everything about this piece of art. I guess what I'm trying to say is, it's rare to see sacrifice. Especially in modern music. I see it here.

When this song came out I was renovating a small house we used to have behind my parent's house to live in and I remember painting the walls and listening to it on repeat. And it's unbelievable how u connect music with memories and when I listen to it now it brings me back the feeling of freedom and the scent of paint 😂😂 💓
