Yeasayer released their second studio album, Odd Blood, in February 2010, featuring more pop music influences than earlier work. The band revealed that the album came out of a massive acid trip in New Zealand. Peter Gabriel’s drummer Jerry Marotta helped to record Odd Blood in an upstate New York studio packed with rare synths and percussion instruments from around the globe to create the characteristic worldbeat sound of the album.
Yeasayer released their third studio album, Fragrant World, in August 2012. According to the Fingers Never Bleed Songfacts, it was named after a track that didn't make the new album's final cut.
Yeasayer officially announced its dissolution on December 19, 2019.
Longevity
Yeasayer Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Just like the old days
Golden seaplane
Dollar tossed in the take bin
What a bargain
Turned up in yellow night
Found oysters on the beach
Undressed from the waist
My girl says that
All the rain promises is
To give life to the seeds, sea
Live in the moment
Never count on longevity
Please
Ribbons showing
Very plainly on her skin
Okay I want in
Heels overhead
With her
Never monetized
My lovely space case
The times I'm in (there?) are cheap
Legs bruised up from the beast
Undressed from the waist
My girl says that
All the rain promises is
To give life to the seeds, sea
Live in the moment
Never count on longevity
Please
The opening lines of Yeasayer’s “Longevity” are, on the surface, enigmatic. The singer is “harmonizing with a ghost of a late face,” which could be interpreted in a few different ways. Is the late face that of someone who has passed, or someone who is simply no longer present in the singer’s life? Without more context, it’s hard to say. The next lines, however, provide a bit more clarity: “Golden seaplane / Dollar tossed in the take bin / What a bargain / Turned up in yellow night / Found oysters on the beach / Undressed from the waist.” Here we have a series of sensory details that create a vivid and dreamlike atmosphere. The golden seaplane and the dollar in the take bin suggest a kind of surreal kitsch, while the oysters on the beach and the mention of undressing from the waist hint at something more sensual.

@@papayer Idk, Sweet Harmony has a similar melody but an entirely different tone and production. The song is more LCD Soundsystem leaning with a worldbeat influenced (yes I know "world" is a dumb term) bridge. It's also more freaky in vocal and production style.
I do get why this album doesn't click with a lot of people, but I honestly found it freaking incredible the whole way through, once it grew on me. It juggles a lot of different styles (R&B, neo-psych, experimental, freak rock, disco, a bit of industrial in there) while still maintaining cohesion and without any filler (in my opinion at least). I actually got it as my first ever vinyl last Christmas.
I really like Amen & Goodbye, revisited it yesterday, but it's also a bit of a mess. It feels like the album ends and starts over multiple times despite it only being 40 minutes long. And I feel the track sequencing is more all over the place, albeit with some really great transitions. I still enjoy it a lot, but Fragrant World feels more polished and cohesive to me.
Also where does he talk about Odd Blood? I know he mentioned talking about it in the past in a yunoreview, but I can't find any mention of it

Just like the old days
Golden seaplane, dollar tusk in the tape bin
What a bargain
All the time up in Yellowknife
Found oysters from the beach
Undressed from the waist
My girl says that
All the rain promises
Is to give life to the seeds, see

Ribbons, showing, very, plainly on her skin
A kind of warming
Heals overhead, with her, never monetized

Undressed from the waist
My girls says that

9 years later, this song is still criminally underrated.
@theneedledrop
digging this.
@WiloPolis03
Yo what
Also I thought you didn't like the album overall? Guess this was an odd one out
@papayer
@@WiloPolis03 I mean, there's only like... 5 standout tracks on the album, this one, Henrietta, Devil, Microscope, and I'm gonna be generous and throw in Reagan even though it's a blatant rip-off of Sweet Harmony by The Beloved.
He didn't like Odd Blood very much at all either, but I'm willing to bet he'd dig Amen & Goodbye. It was more solid and had better production overall.

you have no idea what you speak of... see these guys live. it's phenomenal from a musician's standpoint. it's a full band and they sound exactly like this... LIVE.
@nicholaspecsok100
This song was amazing live. Like others, I wasn't sure on first listen... but WOW. Everyone was grooving at Firefly. Very into it.
@DannyWonder
Still great
@ElectricAlien577
Spent an hour trying to remember the name of this band. Heard this song years ago and the melody popped into my head and i couldnt get it out. FINALLY
@WiloPolis03
Btw Yeasayer and especially this album are both phenomenal, All-Hour Cymbals and Odd Blood (their first two albums) are more critically acclaimed but Fragrant World is my favorite. Their 2nd, 3rd, and 4th albums are fantastic, really recommend them if you haven't gotten into them!
