Evergreen
Yebba Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I kissed my penny and I threw it in
I prayed I′d keep my soul
Went down to the river where the water bends
The only place I know

Oh, I can't see
The forest, for the trees
So will you wait for me?
Will you wait for me?
Will you wait for me?
My evergreen

Standing at the water′s edge
The Mississippi's overflowing
Hold your current in my hands
You bring the meaning to my moments

Oh, I can't see
The forest, for the trees

So will you wait for me?
Will you wait for me?
Will you wait for me?
My evergreen

(Oh, I can′t see)
(The forest, for the trees)
(Oh, I feel so)
(Hopeless against the stream)

So will you wait for me?
My evergreen
I know it′s just as hard in heaven
So will you wait for me?
My evergreen
I know it's just as hard
My evergreen

Overall Meaning

In "Evergreen" by Yebba, the lyrics contain a theme of seeking guidance and strength from the natural world. The opening lines express a desire to protect one's soul and to seek solace at a familiar location. The river is symbolic of the journey of life, with the bends and twists representing the challenges that one faces. The repetition of the line "Oh, I can't see the forest, for the trees" is a metaphor for being unable to see the larger picture because one is too focused on the smaller details.

The chorus repeats the question "Will you wait for me? My evergreen". This line refers to the concept of an evergreen tree, which represents eternal life, renewal, and strength. The singer is asking someone important in their life if they will be a constant source of support and stability, like an evergreen tree.

The bridge of the song uses the imagery of the overflowing Mississippi River and holding its current in one's hands. The metaphor is of trying to control something overwhelming and powerful, like the river, but also finding meaning and beauty in it. The ending lines express a hope to be reunited with someone in the afterlife and to have their support throughout life's challenges.

This is utterly sad; I just found out that her mom committed suicide after Abbey's performance of "My Mind". She changed her name to Yebba shortly after and made this song as a tribute to her; and even sang this in the church her mother attended. May she rest in peace.

Yebba did a lot of that early on so for sure. I pay a lot of attention to them because of that.
